            Network and Computer System Administrator


The network and computer systems administrator supports and maintains both
administrative and instructional computers, software, and networks. This work
includes repair, support, maintenance, and installation of all technology-related
equipment. Employee provides on-site assistance in classrooms, media centers,
computer labs, and administrative offices at 24 campuses. Employee identifies
problems and takes appropriate corrective action. Employee installs and
upgrades all technology-related equipment in network and stand-alone
environments. This employee provides support from the system level for the
maintenance and operation of computers, software, and networks at the building
level. This employee provides technical support to users and other technology-
support personnel. The employee determines the need for technology-related
supplies and repair components and maintains a working inventory of necessary
equipment. The employee works with vendors in the selection of technology-
related items, which are best suited for the needs of the district. This employee
provides building-level and district support and requires highly specialized
knowledge of computer hardware, software, and computer networks. Employee
must exercise independent judgment and initiative in performing assigned duties.
Employee must also exercise tact and courtesy in contacts with school system


      Installs hardware, software, and related peripherals
      Diagnoses and resolves complex computer, software, and network issues
      Ensures the maintenance of computers, software, local area networks,
       and other related equipment by monitoring performance
      Installs upgrades to hardware and software
      Reviews repair requests, determines extent of needed service, determines
       feasibility of request and works closely with users to determine appropriate
       course of action.
      Reviews repair parts and hardware specifications and makes
       recommendations concerning acquisitions.
      Ensures standard quality levels are met with respect to computer repair.
      Maintains service records relating to hardware and software issues
      Makes recommendations to building-level staff regarding upgrades and
       replacement of technology-related equipment
      Provides insight and recommendations in research, purchasing,
       implementation, and support of new technologies.

      Reads and interprets schematics, wiring diagrams, and manuals.
      Operates standard and specialized electronics devices in testing and
       troubleshooting computers and other technology-related equipment.
      Works with users to ensure proper operation and usage of all types of
       technology hardware and software
      Attends classes and seminars to enhance knowledge of equipment and
       operating systems

Performs other related work as required.


   Graduation from a four-year college with a degree in a related field and
   eighteen months experience; or equivalent combination of education and


Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and tolls including computers,
scanners, adding machines, computer software, computer hardware, sharing devices, etc.
Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 5 pounds of
force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, technical manuals, newsletters,
trade journals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare reports, forms, training materials,
system documentation, etc. using prescribed formats.

Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define
problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an
extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.


Strong knowledge of wide and local area network architecture.

Strong knowledge of computers and related technologies.

Strong knowledge of infrastructure requirements and components of wide and local area

Strong knowledge of network operating systems.

Considerable knowledge of wide and local area network protocols and diagnostic tools.

Ability to supervise technical support staff.

Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of technology users.
