Over the next two classes we will compare two documentaries; Roger and Me and Who
Killed the Electric Car. Both films look at the power structures in place around the
American auto industry.
There has been a tremendous stylistic shift in documentaries over the last two decades.
Consider the documentary conventions we outlined on the board. Compare radical shifts
in the construction of “docutainment” in Roger and Me and the straight approach in Who
Killed the Electric Car. What conventions might each film borrow from mainstream
television or blockbuster films? What strategies do the filmmakers use to hold our
interest differently? Is it all shot footage or do they use graphics or animation?
