TEXT: MATH 110 Customized for Queens College
TI – 83 Plus graphing calculator required

The text has been customized for our course and so the syllabus and text are virtually
identical.

The course consists of 3 units.

Unit 1: Chapter 1: Weighted Voting Systems.

You may want to cover some of the material on permutations and combinations from
Chapter 4 here.
The material in Appendix R3 on Percentages is intended as review both for Chapter 1 and
Chapter 2.

Note that there is an analysis of the U.N. Security Council on page 26.

Unit 2: Chapter 2: The Mathematics of Population Growth

Be sure to cover the linear (arithmetic), exponential (geometric), and logistic growth
models.
Remember that Appendix R1 covers scientific notation and Appendix S3 includes
graphing calculator information that the students will find useful.

       Unit 3: Chapter 3, 4, and 5:

The goal here is not to be a statistics course. Chapters 3 and 4 on Descriptive Statistics
and Probability are to be used to set up Chapter 5 on using the Normal Distribution for
statically inference. Consequently, in Chapter 3 deemphasize the material on quartiles
and the 5 number summary, and omit the material on box and whisker plots.
Be sure to use the material in Appendix S1 (on the Ulcer Problem) in Chapter 3, and the
material in Appendix S2 (on Election fraud) in Chapter 5.
