Draft Action Research Project Progress Report
Week 3 Assignment, Part 3: Draft Action Research Project Progress Report
Due Week 3
Title –
Collaborative Ongoing Job Embedded Technology Staff Development
Needs Assessment –
I utilized information both from surveys and from teacher interview process to obtain
information about needs pertaining to a collaborative ongoing job embedded technology
staff development process.
Claim 1: Teachers attend yearly technology inservice sessions. The teachers said that
they often forget what they have learned. Teachers said they need an ongoing method
of professional development.
Evidence to support this claim are the teacher and staff comments following our
last technology in-service. The (Survey Monkey) surveys from this in-service also
reflect that it is necessary to provide technology in-service sessions that are helpful to
teachers. The teachers’ comments reflected that they need to continue to be updated
on methods to use technology in their classrooms.
The following are comments from the Survey Monkey following the spring technology
professional development session.
The technology inservice session was very helpful in assisting me in better
understanding the use of the Star Board. I really liked the booklet that went
along with the session. I sometimes misplace the handouts and booklets from
the inservice sessions. Would it be possible to save this information on the
website somewhere so that we can have easy access to these instructions?
This inservice session about the use of the Star Board and technology curriculum
ideas was really useful and I will be able to use many of the ideas presented
today in my classroom. It would be an advantage to have a follow-up session
next fall.
Results from Survey Monkey teacher surveys ranking teacher inservice is

Claim 2: Teachers would utilize more technology in the classrooms if they had
curriculum ideas, instructions for technology devices, and quick go-to links at their
fingertips.
Evidence to support this claim is from department head interviews. When asked
what their departments need most, I created a list of objectives from their needs. They
needed specific detailed items that could assist their departments in functioning better
by having specific technology tools readily accessible to them.
I utilized interviews with department heads to collect data and determine
assessment needs. I met with each department head and asked them to gather
information from their individual departments concerning ongoing technology needs that
their specific department felt were necessary for better classroom instruction. After they
had an opportunity to gather information from their departmental teachers, they
informed me of their specific department technology needs. They are as follows by
department.

Objectives and Vision of the action research project. (ELCC 1.1) –
We need a collaborative method for teachers to communicate. This method needs to
provide ongoing, year round, job embedded staff development. It needs to meet the
technology needs of the campus and focus on the needs of all departments. Many
times teachers and administrators need a method to obtain software links, instructions,
and a place to collaborate on an ongoing year round basis. If teachers have a place to
have ongoing collaboration where their technology needs can be met quickly, it will
result in improved student learning and success. This site could be utilized in
departmental meetings. The objective and vision of this project will be to create a
collaborative ongoing job embedded technology staff development wiki site that can be
utilized by our campus staff, has easy access, contains necessary technology links and
tools, that is easy to use, can be updated and revised to meet changing needs, and is a
place to collaborate on a year round basis.
Review of the Literature and Action Research Strategy –
“It is critical for veteran teachers to have ongoing and regular opportunities to learn from
each other. Ongoing professional development keeps teachers up-to-date on new
research on how children learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom, new
curriculum resources, and more. The best professional development is ongoing,
experiential, collaborative, and connected to and derived from working with students
and understanding their culture” (Edutopia, 2011, p. 1). The NEA states that “there are
many reasons why ongoing professional development— defined here as the process of
enhancing one’s personal growth and job skills and improving one’s job performance in
order to contribute to outstanding educational results for students” (NEA, 2011, p. 1).
As Dana points out, it is important to share your research and work with others.
“Imagine that you notice a large pond that is stagnant and that you are enticed to create
some type of movement or change in the water” (Dana, 2009, p. 135). This is what
happens if we do not share our work with others. Our campus may be somewhat
stagnant in an area. If we share our research, this area can become vibrant and our
initial inquiry can contribute to the success of our teachers and ultimately to increased
student learning. “An unshared practitioner inquiry is like the stone lying beside the
pond” (Dana, 2009, p. 135). If our knowledge is not shared or in reference to the quotes
from the Dana text, if the stone is not tossed into the pond, the pond will continue to be
stagnant. If we take the stone or the results from our research and share this
information with others we can hopefully make a difference and increase our campus
success. I plan to introduce the design of the action research inquiry through a
PowerPoint Presentation as described in the Dana text Figure 5.2 with the example
sample PowerPoint Presentation (Dana, 2009, p. 146).

Articulate the Vision (ELCC 1.2) – After evaluating the data and information gathered
from the interviews with department heads, I met with our principal to discuss possible
ongoing professional development. We discussed the possibility of developing an
ongoing collaborative technology site such as a wiki or google site that teachers could
access year round to meet technology needs. This site could be continuously improved
and constantly updated to better meet the needs and technology demands of teachers
and staff. I plan to share my research in a PowerPoint presentation. See the following
PowerPoint slides for demonstration of the presentation material.

Manage the organization (ELCC 3.1) –
The technology coordinator will be designated to continuously update and
maintain the site. This site will be an ongoing collaborative technology staff
professional development area where teachers, administrators, and staff can
access for instructions, webinars, YouTube Videos, links, software, data, state
test reviews, TEAMS information and other helpful information to ultimately
improve the classroom and student learning and success.
Manage Operations (ELCC 3.2) –
Data from the department interviews was collected at the end of the previous
school year with Implementation of the project to begin at the start of this school
year. It was a consensus that the teachers did not have technology instructions
that they needed to utilize technology in their classrooms. They also said that
they did not have links / software sometimes necessary to utilize core curriculum
that is important for better classroom instruction. The teachers also had added
that they are offered district staff development, but sometimes forget the topics
that they learned following the day long staff development session. Campus
teachers and administrators agreed that it would be nice to continue to utilize
what they learn at the yearly technology staff development sessions. Many
teachers pointed out that they needed a go to place at their fingertips with easy
access that would be technology based and easy to use so that they could
collaborate with other campus teachers. The wiki site will be available for
teacher use when the school year begins. Conflict will be resolved as necessary.
Any other additional information that needs to be added or included in the site will
be attached as necessary.
Respond to Community Interest and Needs (ELCC 4.2) –
This collaborative professional development wiki site will assist the teachers and
administrators in better meeting the needs of the at-risk students by incorporating
a list of the tutorial / ACE students so that the needs of these students can be
better met. The site will also include information and instructions for technology
programs that can better meet the needs of our ESL students. We can also
include some information on the TELPAS testing process so that all teachers will
have a better understanding of this process. To better meet the needs of our
diverse population, we can include some projects that are specifically directed
toward increasing awareness of cultural diversity. This could include technology
lesson plans for Hispanic Heritage, famous African Americans and African
American inventors, Texas History, and other cultural projects with an emphasis
on cultural diversity. This will increase student success by assisting all in a
better understanding of the various cultural needs.
