Who Can Participate: GAIT projects are funded by a University System of Maryland Redeployment Grant to
the Geriatrics and Gerontology Education and Research (GGEAR) program at UMB to provide a geriatric
team training opportunity for students at:

Western Maryland Area Health Education Center is a community-based center affiliated with the
Maryland Statewide Medical Education and Training System and the Geriatrics and Gerontology Education
and Research (GGEAR) Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The AHEC works to improve
health care delivery in the rural Appalachian counties of Maryland and surrounding communities in
Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The mission of the center is to improve access to and promote quality in
health care through educational partnerships with centers for higher education, community health

                        GAIT Projects Host Sites in Western Maryland
The Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit facilitates the rehabilitation process for patients with a
significant disability that restricts their ability to function independently but have the potential to improve with
intensive therapy. Criteria for admission to the CIRU include: the patient requires at least two types of
therapies (physical, occupational, speech/language therapy) and can participate in therapy a minimum of three
hours per day. Additional services include: recreational therapy, medication management, supportive
psychotherapy, nutritional consultation, rehabilitative nursing, and medical care. The goal of the health
professional team is to prepare the patient to return to the community. The CIRU is located at the brand new
Western Maryland Regional Health Center in Cumberland, MD. www.wmhs.com (140 miles from

Homewood at Williamsport is a not-for-profit Retirement Community serving the needs of older adults since
1932. The 28-acre community includes independent living cottages and apartments, Assisted Living, Respite
and Long Term Nursing Home care, Home Health Care, and Hospice Services in cooperation with Hospice of
Washington County, Inc.Based in Washington County, MD just outside Hagerstown, Homewood Retirement

Frostburg Village Nursing Care Center is an intermediate and skilled care nursing facility, opened in 1978
as the result of the collaboration of faith-based, civic groups, and governments of Frostburg and Allegany
County. It is currently a part of Consulate Health Care, a for-profit company. Frostburg Village provides
nursing care for residents in the nursing home, an assisted living unit, and a dedicated Alzheimer’s/Dementia
Care Unit. Components of the program are designed to meet the medical, mental, social, spiritual, and
recreational needs of residents in a home-like atmosphere. Because persons with cognitive impairments lead
more enjoyable and productive lives when they receive specialized services in a secure environment, Frostburg
Village has a special unit in a wing of the village nursing care center—New Horizons at Frostburg Village.
Individual attention and programs designed to be cognitively and physically stimulating allow residents to
achieve their optimum lifestyle.

Ravenwood Lutheran Village, Hagerstown, MD The campus includes independent living cottages, assisted
living facilities, nursing and rehabilitative care, and adult day services. Adult Day Services provides daytime
assistance, allowing older persons or those with disabilities to remain in the community and maintain as much
independence as possible. Day services offer an alternative to nursing home care and provide a respite for
those caring for someone at home. Participants receive assistance with daily activities such as grooming and
medication. Therapy and counseling services are available. In addition to transportation and meals, the
program offers interaction with others, activities, recreational trips and educational projects. Ravenwood
Lutheran Village is part of Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries, which has provided housing and care to older
