									                      Volunteer Job Description – Fitness Instructor

Summary:

Under general supervision, co-ordinates and leads group adult fitness classes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Plans and leads exercise sessions in one or more assigned fitness areas, such as low
       impact aerobics, stretching/flexibility, circuit training, general fitness, weight training,
       seniors’ fitness.

    2. Sets up and monitors class equipment and ensures its’ return in good condition.

    3. Advises participants on program/class procedures and policies, as appropriate.

    4. Distributes handouts and/or class evaluations, answers questions from participants after
       each session, assists in performing follow up communications with participants as
       required.

    5. Ensures that safety and injury prevention policies and procedures are adhered to by
       participants; reports accidents to EECC staff as required.

    6. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

    1. Current first aid and CPR.

    2. Knowledge of fitness training.

    3. Knowledge of exercise principles and technology.

    4. Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging (CCAA) Senior Fitness Instructor Certification or
       other certifications.

    5. Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures.

    6. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a
       wide range of fitness levels in a diverse community.

All East Elgin Community Complex Volunteers Must Provide:

    1. Three personal references.

    2. Police Security Check.

    3. Signed waiver and confidentiality agreement.

    4. Adhere to dress code as specified by EECC (EECC Program Shirt will be provided).
Training:

      Will be provided by EECC. Policies and procedures will be thoroughly reviewed and any
       questions will be addressed during training.
      Training will be updated as specified/required or as the volunteer position develops.

Time Commitment:

      Volunteer Fitness Instructors will need to be available for 1-5 hours per week during the
       winter and spring season.
