1754-1763
    French and Indian War
Allies of the French and Indian war wanted to
cross the Canadian border to America to gain
colonists. In the end the British won the war. This
war was also known as the Seven Years War.
      Proclamation of 1763
The proclamation of 1763 stated that colonists
were not to move across the Appalachian
Mountains. This law was made because British
leaders did not want to start and uprising with
the Indians. The colonists felt so cheated that
they ignored the law and moved there anyhow.
             Stamp Act 1765
The Stamp Act was the
 first attempt to tax the
 colonists directly. This law
 was to tax every legal
 document. Then it was to
have a stamp on it to
 show it had been taxed
 properly. In return the
 colonists boycotted all
 British goods.
       Townshend Acts 1767
Charles Townshend dislike the colonists. He had told
Parliament that he had found a way to tax the colonists
without offense. The plan was then passed by Parliament.
The plan was called Townshed acts. This tax placed tax on
goods such as glass, paper, paint, lead, and tea brought
into the colonies. The colonists were to pay this tax in gold
or silver. Money would be used to pay for the salaries of
governors. The officials would use writs of assistance( gave
officers the right to search any building). Protests soon
after broke out. A boycott spread throughout all of the
colonies. The Sons of Liberty pressured storekeepers not to
sell imported goods. Trade between Britain and the
 colonies dropped.
      Boston Massacre 1770
One thousand British soldiers arrived under the
command of general Thomas gage. These
soldiers were also known as redcoats for there
bright scarlet jackets. Tension started to rise
among the colonists. They began to throw
snowballs at the redcoats. The soldiers were
worried and began to break into open fire.
When the smoke from the guns was gone and
four men lay dead on the ground. The soldiers
were then arrested and tried for murder. Six of
the soldiers were acquitted. The other two had
there thumbs branded for the penalty of the
 shootings.
                            Tea Act 1773
 The tea act was issued to help the
British East Company by giving it
control over the American tea trade.
Tea would come to the colonies and be
  sold by the merchants. However
colonists still had to pay tax on tea.
  Shippers and merchants were unhappy
about the new law because it made
  business bad. Colonists were mad
because they thought that there would
be more taxes and on more goods. In
protest to the Tea Act colonists
dumped chest of tea into the harbor.
          Boston Tea Party 1773
Colonists organized a plan against the tax on tea(Tea Act).
Colonists unloaded cargoes of tea and stored it in damp cellars so
it would rot. Colonists dressed themselves in Indian outfits that
included a small hatchet and a club. They then snuck onto the
ship and were from there ordered to open the chest of tea. When
opened they were to throw them overboard. This was
accomplished in three hours from the time they entered the boat.
There was a total of 342 chests of tea destroyed.
            Intolerable Acts 1774
King George wanted to master the colonies so he sent out the
   following laws.
1) They closed the port of Boston to all ships until colonists paid
   for the destroyed tea.
2) Town meetings could only be held under the governors
   permission.
3) They allowed British troops to house troops wherever
   necessary
4) They allowed British officials accused of crime to stand trials
in Britain rather than in the colonies.
After these laws were made, the First Continental Congress voted
a ban on all trade with Britain.
