Contact Information: (858) 566-2262 ext. 4226 or Email: firstname.lastname@example.org (Preferred) Course Description: Earth Science 1, 2 is a full-year course that meets the California State Standards. The Earth Science standards are online at www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss. The course supports the district's focus on improving literacy and math. This course has been granted a “g” level laboratory designation by the University of California. Students must observe all safety rules and conduct themselves in a manner that will not endanger themselves or others. Text & Materials Required: Earth Science (by Holt Publishing), a section binder for Earth Science, paper, and pencil. Scientific Calculator (Put name on calculator-CELL PHONE CALCULATORS MAY NOT BE USED ON TESTS). Please cover the text to protect it. Keys to Success: Successful students come to class ready to work and learn every day. Class work begins with the start bell and ends when the class is dismissed by the teacher when the final bell rings. Successful students make an honest effort, complete all the work, ask questions, limit side conversations or any other behavior that distracts focus away from working and learning. Monitoring Student Progress: Parents and students may view grades online using Parent Connect or Student Connect. Scores may be viewed on individual assignments as soon as I enter them into my computer. I also use Parent Connect to post comments about any behavior issues that I am having with your son or daughter. Please contact the main office to get the web address, a password, and an ID if you have not yet signed up for Parent Connect. School wide progress reports are also issued every six weeks directly to your son/daughter in his/her period 4 class. Tutoring and Makeup for Missed Tests/Work: Students should make up missed work/tests/quizzes within one week. I am available by appointment at lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students must arrive promptly. Class Policies *Attendance is important. The material studied one week or month builds on work studied the previous week or month. When a student is absent it is the student's responsibility to find out what was missed in class and make it up in a timely manner. *You must bring your materials to class (notebook, calculator, pencil, etc.) everyday. Periodic notebook checks are conducted and recorded as points and therefore affect your grade as well as citizenship. *You must be quietly sitting in your assigned seat preparing for class when the tardy bell rings. You must sit and work quietly in your assigned seat throughout the entire period. Periodic checks for participation & on-task behaviors are conducted and recorded as points and therefore affect your grade as well as citizenship. *Tests/Quizzes missed due to an absence may be made up at lunch or after school (by appointment) within two weeks. Tests and coursework missed due to truancy may not be made up. * Honesty: Students are expected to be honest and trustworthy in all their endeavors. Students must abide by the MMHS Academic Honesty Policy that is in the Student Handbook and the Internet acceptable use agreement. Plagiarism or cheating will result in a grade of zero for the assignment. Use of a cell phone/MP3 player during testing periods is considered cheating. * Laboratory policies: Students must follow the guidelines in the Flinn Safety Contract posted on my webpage for the safety of all students. MMHS students must follow directions and use equipment appropriately. Goggles must be worn during certain critical labs and long hair secured in back. Follow the lab procedures. Do not create your own lab. Horseplay is poor lab technique and will result in a zero for that activity. Continued horseplay will result in suspension from all labs without the opportunity to makeup the lost points. *Absolutely no food, no drinks may be consumed in class. *Students should leave all valuables at home. Neither the teacher nor school staff will investigate or search for stolen/lost cellphones, mp3 players, etc. Bring at own risk. *Dress and behave appropriately-no hats, offensive language, or offensive T-shirts. *Tardies & Truancies = Detention & Lowered Citizenship as stated in the MMHS Student Policy Handbook. Grading, Participation, and Citizenship Policies Grading Policy: The percentage of points earned is used to determine grades: 100-90%=A; 80-89%=B; 70-79%=C; 60-69%D; Below 60%=F Tests are usually 100 points each, unit work (including participation and being on task) about 15-25 points, lab work about 15 points, other miscellaneous assignments can range from 5-15 points depending on the nature of the assignment. This means that tests are roughly worth about 50% of the course grade and roughly 50% of the grade will be classwork, labs, and other miscellaneous assignments. *Late Work Policy: Work is due on the due date. Points are deducted per day late when turned in after due date. However no points will be given once the class set of papers is graded and returned. Citizenship Grade: Every student is expected to follow the MMHS citizenship policy. Citizenship grades are issued every 6 weeks, which start at the beginning of every grading period. The maximum possible citizenship grade will be determined by attendance. All unexcused absences must be cleared within 72 hours. The following 4 criteria will be used to determine whether or not the citizenship grade will be further reduced: participation in learning, follows classroom rules, displays on-task behaviors and is respectful to others. My expectations are: Participation in learning means: Student works independently on individual assignments. Student is a contributing member of group activities. Student pays attention. Student is active during class discussions. Student constantly pays attention. Student responds to teacher prompts. Student is academically honest as described in student handbook. Follows classroom rules means: Student is respectful to self and all others Student comes prepared to class and follow directions. Displays on-task behaviors means: Student actively works on assigned task according to directions. Student is not working on work from another class.
