Literacy is a MCMS goal for this year! Research says, "Reading 11 or more books a year resulted in performance scores at least
30 points higher than students who said they read no books; and at least 20 points higher than students who read 2 or fewer books."
As a Making Middle Grades Work (MMGW) school, it is recommended that middle school students read the equivalent of 25 books per
year across the curriculum. For the 2009-2010 school year, MCMS would like for all students to read a minimum of 10 books or the
equivalent. MMGW suggests that "students read 100 pages of technical text to receive credit for one book." Other suggestions for
reading may include newspaper articles, magazines, fiction or nonfiction books, or other articles of interest in any class. MCMS offers 3
days a week of 30 minutes for sustained silent reading to help promote this initiative school wide. (This also helps fulfill reading log
requirements for ELA teachers.) Please help support our goal of literacy at home in any way you can.
