Dear Parents and/or Guardians:
Welcome to the 5th Grade! I have been with the school for nearly 15 years and have previously taught
3rd grade Language Arts, 5th grade, MS Math, MS ELA, computer skills and served as the Library Media
My educational background includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood and Elementary
Education, Masters of Education Degree in Educational Computing and Technology and Certification as a
K-12 Library Media Specialist. All of which were acquired from Gannon University.
This year your 5th grade child will change classes for two subjects. They will spend 4 weeks of each
quarter in Science daily with Mrs. Koch and 4 weeks of Social Studies daily with me. The final week of
each quarter, we plan to have students share projects and celebrate their successes with culminating
activities for both homerooms. Departmentalizing Social Studies and Science will help students to
improve their interpersonal skills through adapting to different teaching styles, allows for more frequent
movement during the day, which helps increase attention, enables teachers to cover more of the state
standards by allowing for more time on content and task, and helps students scaffold and build on the
previous days lesson in each content area which makes the content learning consistent and more
meaningful for the student. By providing this opportunity to experience class changes, we hope this will
better prepare them as they move forward in their education, as well.
Attached you will find classroom information about grades, class rules, expectations and more. Please
review the items with your child. I will discuss them with the students, also.
I am looking forward to meeting each of you soon at our upcoming Open House. I feel confident that we
are going to have a great year working together to meet the needs of your child. If you have any
questions there are three methods to reach me listed below. I will return your call or respond via email
as soon as I am able.
