1. Western Regional Early Intervention Conference
April 23-25 in Colorado Springs

This conference is designed to support professionals working with children
newborn to five years of age, who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or visually
impaired and deaf-blind and their families. A session on the Teaching Pyramid

2. New Report Discusses Benefits of Content-Rich Preschool Curriculum

A recent report from the Albert Shanker Institute discusses the benefits of
aligning preschool curriculum with new research about how children learn in the
academic areas of oral language, pre-literacy, mathematics, and science. It
provides guidance on developmentally appropriate accomplishments for pre-k
children, effective instructional practices, components of a strong curriculum, and

3. New Report on the Impact of Early Childhood Programs

The Brookings Institute and First Focus have published a new report entitled
Impacts of Early Childhood Programs, which provides up-to-date evidence on the
effectiveness of several early childhood programs and their impact on children
and families. It includes a series of concise summary briefs for policy-makers on
State Pre-K, Early Head Start, Head Start, Model Early Childhood Programs, and

4. New Policy Brief on Linking Early Learning and the Early Grades –
Lessons from the SPARK Initiative

The Education Commission of the States has published a new policy brief
entitled, While no one was looking – Community-based solutions to linking
Early learning and the early grades: Implications for state policy. Lessons from
the SPARK Initiative (2009), by Mimi Howard. SPARK (Supporting Partnerships
to Assure Ready Kids) is a five-year initiative funded by the W.K. Kellogg
Foundation, which works to improve child outcomes by creating more continuity
across early childhood and K-12 education. The report is available online at

5. The Changing Face of the United States: The Influence of Culture on
Early Child Development

The cultural beliefs, values, and behaviors within a family all have an impact on
early child development. A new report The Changing Face of the United States:
The Influence of Culture on Early Child Development is an important review of
the issue and a summary of the latest research dealing with the impact of culture
on early childhood services. This research summary was made possible through
generous funding by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Bernard van Leer
Foundation.

7. Working Paper Examines Importance of Addressing Serious Emotional
and Behavioral Problems Early

A new working paper from the National Scientific Council on the Developing
Child, entitled Mental Health Problems in Early Childhood Can Impair Learning
and Behavior for Life, reviews recent evidence on the potentially serious
consequences of significant mental health problems in young children and
examines the importance of addressing emerging emotional and behavioral

8. Parent Training Modules on How to Promote Children’s Social and
Emotional Skills

9. “On the Go” Early Literacy Materials Now Available in Somali
Source: Washington Learning Systems – January 27, 2009

Washington Learning Systems has posted a Somali version of its free parent-
child early literacy activities entitled “On the Go”. These activities can be used
outside the home (in the car, while walking, during bus rides) with children from
birth through preschool. They were developed with support from the U.S.
Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and are
appropriate for children with disabilities, as well as children who are developing
