Mon.          Objectives:
              (1) Review of day’s objectives and homework assignments.
Altered       (2) Writing/Analysis Warm-Up: Students will spend 4-5 minutes writing in response to a projected prompt.
bell          Purpose is to get students thinking, making connections then expressing their ideas in writing. (SOL 12.6)
schedule      (3) Increase use of higher level vocabulary and spelling accuracy to improve writing: Students will
              demonstrate mastery of Vocab Unit 1 Part 2 through a quiz. They will then be introduced to the words,

              pronunciation, definitions, and usage of Vocab Unit 2 Part 1 (SOL 12.3).
assembly-     (4) Peer editing groups: Students will work in groups of four to read and evaluate each other’s personal narrative

speech        (6) Read/analyze Anglo-Saxon heroic (epic) poetry: Continue to read aloud the epic, Beowulf (pgs 39-60).
              Identify meter and characteristic devices of Anglo-Saxon poetry; analyze cultural values/issues/themes reflected in
              the story. Apply historical context. Understand events and the purpose/effect of each. Discussion during reading.
              Students will complete a character/names/places guide as we read (SOL 12.3, 12.4).

Tues.         Objectives:
              (1) Review of day’s objectives and homework assignments.
              (2) Writing Warm-Up: Students will spend 4-5 minutes writing in response to a projected prompt: Purpose is to
              get students thinking, making connections then expressing their ideas in writing. (SOL 12.6).
              (3) Increase use of higher level vocabulary and spelling accuracy to improve writing: Students will
              demonstrate growing mastery of Vocab Unit 2 Part 1 by turning in completed syn/antonym worksheets. Distribute
              choose-the-right-word worksheets (SOL 12.3).
              (4) Return/review quizzes on Intro to British History through the middle ages, and quiz on Anglo-Saxon lit.
              Students will make corrections as a test review mechanism. (SOL 12.4, 12.5).
              (5) Read/analyze Anglo-Saxon heroic (epic) poetry: Finish reading of the epic, Beowulf (pgs 39-60). Identify
              meter and characteristic devices of Anglo-Saxon poetry; analyze cultural values/issues/themes reflected in the story.
              Apply historical context. Understand events and the purpose/effect of each. Discussion during reading. Students
              will complete a character/names/places guide as we read. This will then be reviewed for accuracy. Discussion of
              elements/features of the epic and epic hero seen in this lit. Students will complete an open-book quiz (SOL 12.3,
              12.4).
              (6) Grammar/punctuation: Presentation by teacher, using projection and handouts, on proper use of punctuation:
              commas, semi-colons, and colons. Teacher will discuss the types of sentences (simple, compound, complex, etc –
              and the need to vary sentence structure (Students are to edit their personal narratives with this in mind.) Students
              will participate in editing practice exercises at the whiteboard (SOL 12.6, 12.7).

Wed.          Objectives:
              (1) Review of day’s objectives and homework assignments.
              (2) Increase use of higher level vocabulary and spelling accuracy to improve writing: Students will
              demonstrate growing mastery of Vocab Unit 2 Part 1 by turning in completed choose-the-right-word worksheets.
              Reinforce mastery through return and review of graded syn/antonym worksheets (SOL 12.3).
              (3) Reading-check quiz on Ch. 1-4 of The Time Machine. Teacher will lead class in discussion of the chapters.
              Compare students’ vision of the future with that found in the novel. Analyze possible reasons why the author did
              not give names to any of the characters; explore the significance of the sphinx statue (use of allusion); describe the
              world and creatures the Time Traveler finds, and what initial conclusion he reaches about mankind (SOL 12.4).
              (4) Through a Jeopardy-style review game, students will demonstrate knowledge of British history through the
              Anglo-Saxon period; the culture/values/issues/language of the Anglo-Saxon period; the literary forms, devices, and
              contributors, as well as content of the lit we have read (SOL 12.3, 12.5, 12.4).

              hero; the literary forms, devices, and contributors, as well as content of the lit we have read (SOL 12.3, 12.5, 12.4).
              (5) Students will engage in silent reading of The Time Machine ch. 5-8 while others finish the test.
              (6) Proper use of punctuation: commas, semi-colons, and colons. Four types of sentences: simple, compound,
              complex, compound-complex. Following up on Tuesday’s instruction, students will participate in editing practice
              exercises at the whiteboard, and will also create their own sentences for others to edit (SOL 12.6, 12.7).
