NEW HYDROGEN STORAGE MATERIALS - INVESTIGATIONS THROUGH STRUCTURAL AND

Material scientists have used neutron diffraction for many years as a means of obtaining
fine structural characterisation of materials. At Cardiff, we have developed a number of
techniques for measuring the electronic properties of materials (using microwave
resonators), without having to make direct contact to the material.
This project is a unique opportunity to fold these two techniques into the same
experimental rig. It hasn’t been done before, so it will provide world-first information on a
range of new material systems, with focus on new generation hydrogen storage materials.

The award will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU fee rate and will provide a stipend at the
UK Research Council rate (£13,590 in 2011/12) plus an enhancement of £1,000 per annum.
Amount of funding
Please note that overseas candidates will be required to fund the balance of fees at the
overseas fee rate themselves.
Eligibility The studentship is open to Home, EU or overseas candidates.
Candidates should have a first-class honours degree, or a 2.1 plus a postgraduate Masters
degree (or their equivalents) in a relevant subject. Applicants whose first language is not
