Tawanda is a Shona (Zimbabwe) word that means “for the many”
i.e. learning for the many.
Background to Tawanda Learning
1. Commenced trading 1995.
2. Initial business focus Development of bespoke training material.
3. Areas of training expertise Banking systems; Insurance systems; Banking and insurance products; Business
processes; Sales and customer care; Supervisory management; Performance
management; Recruitment and selection.
4. e-Learning Started developing interest in the design of e-learning material and systems.
5. National Qualifications With advent of NQF started developing an NQF-aligned LMS program.
Framework (NQF)
6. Tawanda LMS version 1 Sold version 1 to various companies and implemented it with Learnership
projects: Clientele Life; IISA; Deloitte; Pi Africa; Nedcor Bank.
7. Tawanda LMS version 2 Commenced redesign of version 1. Sold version 2 to Academy of Learning – 25
Colleges in RSA and neigbouring countries.
8. Future development of Extend program functionality to include capabilities still not redeveloped from
Tawanda LMS version 1 such as costing and the off-line capability.
Background to Tawanda Learning
9. Legislative background to the The training industry has been radically altered by various acts and the
Tawanda LMS introduction of the NQF. This has given rise to many legislative compliance needs
relating to the quality of learning materials, assessment and reporting.
10. Tawanda Learning’s response The complexities of the NQF have increased the need for computerisation of
to legislation learning and the cost of delivery. Not only is proper record keeping vital (as has
always been the case) but in addition, the learning process has become more
costly and more complex to manage under the NQF. While record keeping is the
simpler of the two challenges, managing the learning process is a more complex
challenge, and this is a major focus of the Tawanda LMS. In addition, by
increasing reliance on electronic delivery the LMS helps to drive the cost of
learning down.
11. Collaboration Delivering learning is a multi-disciplinary task that draws on wide ranging
expertise in the form of subject matter experts, facilitation experts, course
designers, assessors, moderators, IT experts and administrative personnel etc.
Tawanda Learning’s role is to bring all these experts together in an effort to deliver
high-quality learning experiences to people that are managed using the Tawanda
LMS.
Overview of the Tawanda LMS
1. Description A software tool that manages learner records, learning resources and processes using an
integrated web-enabled interface in a way that largely complies with the National
Qualification Framework in South Arica.
2. Program language ASP with JavaScript.
3. Delivery Internet or Intranet.
4. Back-end MS SQL Server
5. Overall architecture • Modular design.
• Login using user number and password.
• Menu driven access to LMS functions that can be controlled using role
allocation and permissions.
• Designed to promote collaboration between all role-players using the LMS
and thereby spread the workload.
• Capable of managing online learning and assessment or manual delivery
processes.
Advantages of the Tawanda LMS
1. The LMS learning data structures conform to those of the NQF.
2. It’s a web-based solution available anywhere in the world.
3. Cuts the cost of training and assessment delivery in terms of time, travel
and printing.
4. The INSETA and TETA have training vendors using the Tawanda LMS.
5. Offers a centralised repository of learning data and learning material.
6. Real-time access to learning data and results by learners, administrators and
managers.
7. Dual level access control via role allocation and permissions.
8. Potential to upload learning credits to the National Learner Record Database
- NLRD.
5. Manage complex multi-vendor price allocation per product among participating
training providers – up to 10 per learning product.
6. Secure online repository for learners’ portfolio evidence.
7. Already deployed and working well.
8. Can be use in a collaborative venture between multiple training vendors whose
products complement one another.
Tawanda LMS users
If the Tawanda LMS will be used for NQF credit-bearing purposes then your SETA may
need to be involved. Although the SETA does not need direct access to the LMS, they usually
SETA need to approve the use of the LMS in relation to the provider organisation’s programme
approval and registration.

operating software supplier
This service could be performed by an independent consultant or, more likely, by the
Learning/market needs client company itself. This process drives the procurement and delivery processes
identifier and is vital for ensuring that relevant learning material is delivered to clients.
This service would be performed by the client company itself. It involves identifying
Learning resource procurement appropriate learning materials, assessments and assessors, negotiating the price
and contracting providers where necessary.

Access to the Tawanda LMS
Option 1: Enterprise installation
This option is for companies that want to install the Tawanda LMS on their own server for their own
use only. The benefits are:
• Total control over the technical environment.
• Develop in-house expertise to manage the LMS’s installation, upgrades and maintenance.
• Secure records.
• Access to technical support as needed.
Option 2: Hosted solution
This option is suitable for companies that do not want to incur the overheads of on-site infrastructure,
installation and maintenance but still want the LMS & server for their own use only. The benefits are:
• Dedicated server housed and managed by Tawanda’s ISP.
• Lower overhead and personnel costs.
• Secure records.
• Automatic back up of data.
• Seamless program upgrades and maintenance.
• Access to technical support.
Option 3: Shared hosted solution
This option is for smaller companies that do not require a dedicated server but who wish to run the
Tawanda LMS from their own web site. The database will be hosted by Tawanda’s ISP.
This option is cheaper and except for point one the same benefits apply as for Option 2 above.
High-level action plan
The steps listed below are not necessarily linear but give an indication of the tasks required to deliver learning
and assessments via the Tawanda LMS.
1. Determine the best LMS access option.
2. Determine who will supply the administration and assessment staff.
3. Determine which unit standards are needed by the client company, procure the material and group them
into qualification and subject clusters.
4. Determine the optimal delivery method for the subjects and prepare the training material for delivery.
Alternatively, use the material in its current format.
5. Determine the most cost-effective assessment methods and prepare the assessments accordingly.
Alternatively, use the assessments in their current format.
6. Ensure legislative compliance.
7. Determine the final price per subject and the allocation values per beneficiary.
8. Plan the relevant learner and learning administration processes and develop the required documentation.
9. Plan and develop an information/communication campaign to ensure that the target market (internal
to the client company or external) will be informed of the available training.
10. Install the LMS on the web server and set up the required database structures.
11. Capture the qualifications, subjects and assessments on the LMS.
12. Commence learner registrations and subject enrolments on the LMS.
13. Deliver learning material to learners.
14. Commence formative and summative assessments and marking.
15. Ongoing management of materials, the LMS, learners and administration tasks.
16. Upload credits to the NLRD.
