– Library Catalogs
– Databases
– Discussion Groups and News Groups
– Telnet

Why don’t Search Engines
Get To the Deep Web?
• “Spiders” only search via hyperlinks, recording
info about static HTML pages
Deep Web vs. Surface Web
• Deep Web is approximately 500 times
larger than the Surface Web
• Deep Web is estimated to be 3 times
better in quality
• The Deep Web is growing much faster
than the Surface Web
• 95% of the Deep Web is free, but users
must first pass through the front pages
• Currently technology is being developed to
systematically search the Deep Web

• Manual Searches:
– Go to URLs of databases
– Join Discussion Lists and use archives
– Etc.
• This can be very time consuming!
