              The Deep Web
• Internet resources that most spiders can’t get
  to:
   – Non-HTML material
   – Dynamic HTML
   – Library Catalogs
   – Databases
   – Discussion Groups and News Groups
   – Telnet
   – Others
        Why don’t Search Engines
         Get To the Deep Web?

• “Spiders” only search via hyperlinks, recording
  info about static HTML pages
   Deep Web vs. Surface Web
• Deep Web is approximately 500 times
  larger than the Surface Web
• Deep Web is estimated to be 3 times
  better in quality
• The Deep Web is growing much faster
  than the Surface Web
• 95% of the Deep Web is free, but users
must first pass through the front pages
• Currently technology is being developed to
  systematically search the Deep Web
          How Can We Search
            the Deep Web?

• Buy into commercial service

            But, why bother?
• Now we know how to use search engines to get
  WWW pages !!!

• Most academic institutions assume that simple
Web pages are highly questionable, if not
  worthless.

• Remember, anyone can publish a Web page.
             CCOL Offers:
• Easy access to academic journals

• Some of the journals are refereed

• Many of them are full text
