Café Supervisor
(part time: 20 hour week)
Job description
Purpose of Post
To efficiently supervise catering staff enhancing and promoting the reputation of
artsdepot by providing an excellent customer experience. This is a suitable role for a
highly organised self-starter with strong customer service, supervisory,
communication, administrative and IT skills. We are looking for an ambitious,
hardworking candidate with a flexible attitude.
Report to: Café Manager
Supervision of: Casual Café Staff
Member of: Catering Department
Principal Responsibilities
To be the public face of artsdepot, delivering a comprehensive service to all
artsdepot customers.
To carry out catering duties (not limited to serving customers, basic food
preparation, general café housekeeping, event set-up, programming tills etc.) in
any catering space at artsdepot or elsewhere as required.
To be responsible for the opening and closing procedures for cafédepot,
bardepot and any other catering locations around the venue.
To supervise café staff including Front of House Assistants, by taking on an
exemplary role, leading by example, offering advice and direction.
To supervise café staff working in cafédepot, bardepot and at other confectionary
retail points around the venue and occasionally at other locations ensuring that all
tasks are carried out following all café procedures.
To be friendly and positive in all dealings with the public.
To ensure that the FOH café and bar foyers are welcoming, presentable and
safe.
To be aware and follow all catering procedures, ensuring café staff carry out their
role following best practice guidelines.
To ensure correct and accurate till operation by all café staff at all times
To be responsible for supervising café staff to ensure that all procedures are
followed with regards to cash-handling, till operation and general café service.

To supervise, assist and serve at private functions, various points of sale,
including working in cafédepot and bardepot
To keep up-to-date on current café systems and procedures
To be fully conversant with artsdepot facilities and terms of trading
To be responsible for setting up for events as directed by the Café Manager.
To assist with any other duties within the department as required
Customer Service
To meet artsdepot’s agreed standards of dress and appearance including
branded clothing.
In conjunction with the Café Manager assist with the training of café staff,
supervising and monitoring performance to ensure required standards are
consistently met.
To attend pre-event briefings to ensure that you have the relevant information
prior to each shift.
To ensure a thorough knowledge of events at artsdepot to enable the catering
department to give the best possible customer service.
To brief café staff to ensure that essential information is passed on/received and
that good communication is maintained at all times.
Sales & Marketing
To be pro-active in selling and cross-selling to meet sales targets
To actively pursue an in-depth knowledge of the café department’s EPOS
system.
To deliver and train café staff on end-point sales using computerised and manual
systems
To ensure that FOH presentation and appropriate music is consistently
maintained throughout cafédepot and bardepot foyers.
Finance
To be responsible for all cash, cheque and card transactions handled and
reconcile takings ensuring that all financial procedures are adhered to
To ensure financial records are maintained and accurate.

Communications
Represent artsdepot with external stakeholders and the wider arts community,
building constructive relationships to further the work and profile of artsdepot.
To attend briefings, meetings and training as requested by the Café Manager
To check the catering e-mail daily and respond as necessary.
To work with the Café Manager to ensure that the administration of the
department is up to date and organised
As directed by the Café Manager to ensure that essential information is passed
on to café staff and good communication is maintained at all times.
To maintain open communication with all users of the building and to be a
spokesperson between café staff and Management, representing team views.
Health and Safety
To supervise all café staff to ensure all operations are carried out within the
relevant Health and Safety legislation.
To be aware and follow evacuation procedures, including knowing fire exits and
refuge points.
To supervise and assist in the safe evacuation of the building.
To supervise café staff in ensuring the safety of visitors and the security of
artsdepot is maintained.

Personal Specification
Essential
Minimum of one year’s relevant experience of working in a retail catering
establishment or similar multi disciplinary theatrical/arts venue with proven
leadership qualities
Proven experience of serving and dealing with customers and clients.
A friendly, welcoming manner with the ability and social skills necessary to deal
with a range of customers and clients
Ability to deal effectively and with empathy to all users of artsdepot
Experience of working within a small multi-skilled team.
Proven organisational skills and a “can-do” attitude
Ability to analyse situations and solve problems which may arise in the context of
the department.
Track record within quality catering and customer service environment
A professional appearance with impeccable hygiene standards
Ability to take instruction and use own initiative when working independently.
Ability to prioritise and work under pressure with good time management
Energetic, creative and enthusiastic team player
Willingness to work flexibly which will require evening and weekend work; all roles
will involve working on a 7 day rota including evenings, public holidays and
weekends
Desirable
Good standard of literacy and comprehension
General café/bar service experience
Understanding of working within an arts organisation
Passionate about live performance and the arts in general

Conditions of service
Annual salary is £16,500 pro rata for a 20 hour week. All roles will involve working
flexibly on a 7 day rota including evenings, public holidays and weekends.
Regular opening hours of artsdepot will be from 9am until 11pm seven days a
week, with later opening on occasions, although this may be subject to change
This post will include out of office hours duties, such as evening meetings and
events. These are considered to be part of your core commitment to artsdepot.
There will be no overtime payments, but time off in lieu of significant extra working
hours may be taken with prior agreement of your line manager.
There will be an annual salary review effective from the beginning of each financial
year. There will also be an annual performance appraisal when you will have the
opportunity to set your targets for the coming year with your Line Manager.
You will be able to take four weeks holiday pro rata during your first two years of
continuous employment, and five thereafter excluding statutory public holidays.
Two weeks of which must be taken in August if requested by the Catering
Manager.
You will be expected to actively participate in the implementation of the Arts Depot
Trust’s policies on equal opportunity, access, cultural diversity and health and
safety.
