Green-Schools, known internationally as Eco-Schools, is an international environmental
education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that
promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole school action for the environment. Green-
Schools (Eco-Schools) is an initiative of, and co-ordinated on an international level by,
FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). There are currently over 20,000 schools
in 41 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania and South America taking part in the

An Taisce has been co-ordinating the Green-Schools programme in Ireland since 1997
in partnership with Local Authorities. Currently over 81% of all schools in Ireland are
registered in the programme. An Taisce is now recruiting 1 Full Time Research &
Communications Officer (Green-Schools Travel). The Green-Schools Travel
programme operates on a national basis and encourages sustainable travel to school
and is the largest programme operated by the EEU. The programme, which is funded by
the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport (DTTS) and supported by the National
Transport Authority (NTA), has been running nationally since 2008 and in the Greater
Dublin Area since 2005.
The post will be full-time for 12 months subject to funding. The post will be 32.75
hours per week but a degree of flexibility of working hours around evenings and
weekends will be expected.

Tasks and Responsibilities

o    Maintain, develop and monitor communication of the Green-Schools Travel
     programme (including website management, e-zine distribution, twitter updates)
o    Manage and report the extensive data in relation to the Green-Schools Travel
o    Coordinate both qualitative and quantative research compilation for the
o    Liaise with programme partners in relation to data & research.
o    Communicate reports, research, information to media, sponsors, partners,
     government departments.
o    Prepare monthly progress reports.
o    Carry out a number of Green-Schools assessment and renewal assessment visits
     in your area.
o    Undertake any other such relevant duties as may from time to time arise and are
     considered appropriate.
