                                MTSU Dual Credit Procedure
Students interested in receiving Dual Credit will be asked to complete a Special Exam Form for Dual
Credit which will be developed by Admissions. The student will mail the form and the testing fee to the
MTSU Business Office; 1301 East Main St., CAB 103; Murfreesboro, TN 37132. This form will include:
 Student identification information needed to build the student in the Banner system as a
            general person

 The testing fee of $20 per credit hour which is payable prior to sitting for the exam (this fee is
non-refundable even if the student does not pass the competency test). If the student misses
the test date due to illness or an emergency, the test must be made-up within 2 weeks of the
original test date. (*If a student is unsuccessful on the competency test, they are not allowed
            to retake the test.)

 The form and testing fee should be received in the Business Office no later than 14 days prior
            to the competency test date

 Information regarding how/when their credit will be posted at MTSU

 Information regarding the grade assigned

After the Business Office receives the Special Exam Form for Dual Credit and deposits the fee, it will be
stamped and forwarded to the Admissions Office at MTSU.

The Department/Faculty member grading the dual credit exam will provide Admission with a master list
of students (in Excel or Access) intending to participate in the dual credit course at the beginning of the
term. This list would include full legal name, date of birth, mailing address, email address, and name of
high school. This list will be used by Admissions for recruiting purposes. The Department/Faculty
member will distribute the Special Exam Form for Dual Credit and the exam to the high schools.

Upon grading the exam, the faculty member would update the master list noting which students passed
the exam. This would be sent to Admissions for posting the credit into Banner. Admissions will retain this
document in cases where students did not pay the fee but request the credit at a later date.

The department/faculty member is responsible for notifying the student if they have successfully passed
the dual credit exam. This notification should include:
 Information regarding whether or not the student successfully completed the competency exam

 If the student successfully completed the competency exam, also include information regarding
how/when their credit will be posted at MTSU
o the credit will be posted as a P grade on the MTSU transcript (which a student can access
                 once they are admitted)
o once the student completes a course at MTSU, the student could request the transcript be
                 sent to another institution
o if a student doesn’t see the credit once admitted, they should contact the Admissions
Office who will verify the master list has indicated the student passed the test and that
                 payment was received

                              Research Paper Guidelines
                                  Dual Credit Class

The research paper required for the dual credit class is worth 200 points of your total 800
end-of-course points. Note: The point requirement is ONLY a recommendation. Each teacher
may choose this accordingly. It is recommended you pay close attention to completing the paper
before the week (day, night, moment) it is due. In addition to the requirement for original
research, you are responsible for the writing of the paper (grammar, spelling, punctuation, and
typing of the paper).

It is strongly advised that you type the paper with a word processing program on a
personal computer and take advantage of the spell checking program built onto the program.
Most word processing programs also have a grammar checking program. Although they have
their faults, they can catch the obvious problems before you turn in your paper for a grade.

The research topic you chose must be approved by you instructor. It is strongly
recommended that you gain approval of the topic before you begin writing. The paper must be at
least 5 pages in length, not including the cover page and bibliography. You may use no more
than 2 internet sources for your paper. You must include at least 5 sources of material.

The margins of the paper must be no more than 1 inch on all side, and it must be double
spaced. Use only 12 point font. Do not waste space on the non-cover pages with information like
the title, your name, the date, etc. You may number the pages if you like. If your word processor
allows you to include your name in addition to the page number automatically, use your last
name only. The paper should be submitted via e-mail to Alanna Neely, MTSU ABAS Dual
Credit Coordinator at alneely@mtsu.edu. Note: This is to give the student the experience in
submitting papers electronically. Ms. Neely will not be responsible for grading the research
papers. If you have any other questions on the paper, please ask well in advance of the due date.

                                               11
                        Testing Procedure

 All Final exam tests will be given through MTSU D2L. This is
110% secure and testing will be secure.

 Ornamental Horticulture preparatory exams (4 total), will be given
by the high school teacher and his or her own discretion.
Remember these 4 exams help to improve the pass rate for the
students. NOTE: MTSU does not use any of these four grades.
MTSU is only concerned with the Final Exam grade.

 Since Agribusiness: Fundamentals and Applications is a pilot
course, the 4 preparatory exams will be given through Ms. Neely’s
website using Examview and grades are automatically sent via e-
  mail to Ms. Neely.

Grades will then be e-mailed back to the high school Agriculture
  Teacher.

 The final grade of P will be determined ONLY by the Final Exam.
The student must make a 70% or above to receive credit in either
  course.

                    Helpful Hints, Suggestions, and Ideas
 The sale of plants in the Greenhouse Management class could be used to help pay for the
    $60.00 testing fee.

 Scholarships could be secured from your local Co-op, Cattlemen’s Association, Farm
Credit Services, TSC, local FFA Alumni, or other local agribusinesses to pay the testing
    fee.

 Inform administrators, guidance counselors and other teachers that the Dual Credit is a
result of the Federal and State Law: Perkins IV, Tennessee Public Law 459, and the P-16
Constitution consisting of the Tennessee Department of Education, Tennessee Board of
Regents, and the University of Tennessee System. Note: There are presently various 2 yr
and 4 yr institutions within the State who honor the credit.

 Will the Dual Credit class count at any university? Presently, it only counts at MTSU.
However, there is a good possibility that it will be accepted at any university once it is
    approved after the pilot year.

 If a student decides not to come to MTSU, the class may not count as stated above.
However, if the student enrolls in a class (even if online), it will activate the Dual Credit
class, then both of the classes can be transferred to a different university.

 To view the podcast instructions or presentations on the various units/chapters go to:
    http://mtsu3.mtsu.podcast.323link.com.

 Testing- Review the previous section on how students can take the test online, submit
grades, and show the grade to their Ag. Instructor.

 Some teachers have decided to have the entire class take the class as Dual Credit and then
at the end of the class decide who wants to pay the testing fee so that they can receive the
    three hours of credit.

 As Agriculture Instructors, take advantage of the class as a recruitment tool. It is a fresh,
new thing for high school students to participate in.

 Besides the obvious college-bound students, we want to target those students who are
undecided on their college plans. Hopefully, this class will give these students a better
idea of what college will be like.

 It is important that you coach your students into a college course mode. We have
prepared study questions, tests from the study questions, and an end of course exam from
previous tests. It is suggested that students study the prior test in order to prepare for the
    final.

                                              13
 Remember, if the students study the appropriate material, they will succeed in this class.
The ability of the student determines how long they will have to study.

 A study party or study night with refreshments would be a great thing for some students.
Be creative and innovative to help and assist the students get prepared foe the test and the
    end of course exam.

 Remember, this Dual Credit class is practically FREE! What does a student have to lose?

 Ms. Neely will visit each participating school at least twice (if time permits). Depending
on the number of schools participating, visits could exceed that. The high school teacher
may choose from the following activities to be completed at scheduled visits:

 The Seven Savvy Secrets of College Students, Video and worksheet.
 What Will I Do After High School? This challenges students explore their post-
           secondary education possibilities.
 MTSU School of Agribusiness and Agriscience: What We Have to Offer! (we
have been known to bring along MTSU chocolate milk for testing during this
           presentation!)
 Work Smart Not Hard: Effective Study Skills for the High School and College
           Student
