Chemical genomics for targeted drug discovery
Identification of the molecular targets of bioactive molecules is one route
that assists the medicinal chemist within the pharmaceutical industry in
the development of new therapeutics, for example through identification
of side-effects. Traditional biochemical approaches are time-consuming,
expensive or indeed may not allow identification of low affinity targets.
The chemical genomic approach as exemplified through the use of Magic
Tag® technology allows rapid identification of molecular targets for a
bioactive molecule. Two case studies are presented – one emerging
from a plant secondary metabolite, abscisic acid and one from a current
therapeutic, salbutamol.
