                 Phrasal verbs
• Phrasal verbs are verbs which are followed by one or
   more particles.
 Looking forward to, look up, run out of
• Phrasal verbs can be:
• Literal – They keep the same meaning of the verb
• When the bell rang all the kids ran out of the
   classroom and left school.
• Idiomatic – They change the meaning of the original
   verb.
 Oh no! we run out of gas and the nearest gas station is
   five miles from here!
            PHRASAL VERBS

 Meanings
 Come up with          create or produce
 Come across           find by accident
 Look forward to       to anticipate with pleasure
 Look up           try to find information in a book
 Put up with        tolerate
 Run out of         to finish
 Take off           to leave the ground (airplane)
           PHRASAL VERBS
 Phrasal verbs can be:


 Separable –They can be separated


 Example: put off – put the meeting off
                  put off the meeting
                  put it off
            never: put off it
          PHRASAL VERBS
 Phrasal verbs can be:


 Inseparable –They cannot be separated


 Example: come across
          I came across some pictures.
          I came across them.
 Never: I came some pictures across.
