District Network Support Specialist
DEFINITION
Under the supervision of the District Technology Coordinator, this position primarily
provides technical support for all of the district’s network systems.
REPORTS TO: DISTRICT TECHNOLOGY COORDINATOR
SUPERVISION
May direct the work of junior Technology Support Specialists.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Installs, configures, maintains and troubleshoots the district’s network servers and
workstations. Monitors network performance and recommends upgrades and improvements as
necessary. Resolves network problems and offers technical assistance to users.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
In addition to performing the duties of the District Technology Support Specialist, this
position does the following:
Installs, maintains and monitors the district’s computer networks components
including routers, switches, hubs, cabling, network cards, workstations, and servers.
Installs and configures networking operating systems including Novell, Windows NT,
Appleshare, and Linux.
Performs routine server maintenance
Performs in-depth troubleshooting of network-related problems
Performs systematic preventative maintenance on district servers including mail
servers
Researches and provides solutions to technical problems relating to the district’s
network
Monitors and analyzes network system performance and projects future needs
Maintains network IP address assignments
Documents all service calls
Assist District Technology Coordinator in maintaining district computer equipment
inventory
Assist the District Technology Coordinator in documenting and maintaining network
topology for each facility
Provides technical training to associate technicians
Meets regularly with the District Technology Coordinator to review district-wide
technology support requests
Perform other duties as assigned by the District Technology Coordinator
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
MS-DOS, Windows, and Macintosh operating systems
Common application software including word-processing, spreadsheet, database, and
email
HTML and web page development tools
Microcomputer installation, repair, testing and troubleshooting
Microcomputer diagnostic software, virus checking software, and desktop security
software
Network management and diagnostic software
Novell, Windows NT, Appleshare, and Linux networking operating systems
Network principles, topology, and protocols and standard ethernet network
components
Safety precautions relating to computer equipment
Ability to:
Analyze and solve network hardware and software problems
Communicate effectively with other employees using tact, courtesy, and good
judgment
Read and understand technical manuals and instructions
Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports
Physically perform assigned duties
EXPERIENCE
A minimum of five years experience working with computer systems and networks or
equivalent education. Work experience should include:
Installation, configuration, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of computer
systems
Implementation and maintenance of computer networks
Demonstrated familiarity with network administrative software
EDUCATION
An Associates degree in related field or equivalent combination of work experience and
technical training is required. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent
combination of education and experience is preferred. Related fields include but are not
limited to Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Digital Systems
Technology.
