Highland Secondary School Se pt e mb e r 20 1 2 Mr s . L . Sw a nso n , P r in ci p a l Mr . C . S c hi l li ng , Vi ce P rin c ip a l M r . R . G r an th a m , Vi c e P ri n ci pa l Welcome Back - Principal’s Message September is always a month of new beginnings. I always remember the smell of freshly sharpened pencils, the crisp pages of a new notebook and dreams of what I would write in it. I thought about the old friends I would see again and new ones I would make. There was always anxiety about my new class and whether or not I would get along with everybody. The cool evenings and turning leaves would remind me of field hockey games soon to be played, putting shoes back on my feet and Contents trying to get my curly hair under control. I always looked forward to the new clothes I would wear and the great books I would read. You can tell Principal’s Message 1 I loved school! I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone the New Vice Principal’s Message 1 very best of beginnings this September. International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme This school year we have the exciting challenge of implementing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) at the grade 11 level. It is the result of several years of preparation and offers wonderful possibilities for students and teachers alike. Due to the implementation of this program, declining enrollment, and the promotion of collaborative practice, there have been some changes to our timetable. Most noticeable will be the change from term, every day electives to semester, every other day electives, at the grade 9 – 12 levels. Page 2 of 2 School Newsletter School Start-Up Information On the first day of school, we will be sending home Code of Conduct and Computer Use Agreements with all new students. Please take a moment to look these important documents over before signing them and returning them to the school. During the first week we will also be sending home a demographics form. Please make sure to update all your family information, taking special note to provide or update your email address, as it is an important way for us to communicate with you in a timely manner. When you have a moment, check out our school website (www.highlandsecondary.ca) which is updated on a day to day basis and contains a great deal of information about the school as well as daily announcements and schedules. We will also be collecting a student fee of $25.00. This money goes toward house awards, performances, student phones, intramural sports, presenters, assemblies, pep rallies, and other spirit building activities. Communication In the interest of communication, we ask that you notify the office by phone, email or by note if your son or daughter will be away from school and/or if you will be asking them to leave early or allowing them to come late. We have noticed that regular attendance monitoring by the school and at home makes a big difference in student success. We will notify you if your son or daughter is away without excuse, either through a voice message, email or phone call. Dress Code We encourage students to dress appropriately at school. Highland is a public school and we are expecting all students to keep that in mind when they choose what they wear. Clothing that reflects alcohol, banned substances, racially inappropriate, sexually explicit or homophobic messages will not be allowed, and students wearing this attire will be asked to change it – even if it means being sent home. Additionally, muscle shirts, extremely short skirts and shorts, as well as clothing that reveals large areas of bare skin, should be kept at home. Your support and cooperation in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Activities / Teams / Clubs There will be quite a number of activities, clubs, sports teams and events coming up that students may be interested in joining. Please review the daily announcements on our website to learn how to take advantage of these opportunities. We want to work hard this year to invest in school spirit. The more students are involved, the more they will enjoy their high school experience. Publication of Student Work In regard to student writing, artwork and images, we are required to inform you of the following formal release: “Formal Release for Student Writing, Artwork and Images” In order to comply with Canadian copyright law, the Comox Valley School District is requesting that all parents/guardians who object to having their child’s artwork, written work, or photographic images displayed or reproduced in any format register their objection with their child(ren)’s school(s).
