PURPOSE, REGISTRATION AND GENERAL ELIGIBILITY
The purpose of the 4-H Dog Project is to develop a closer bond with your dog through the study of dogs,
dog behavior and the learning, planning and implementation of positive training methods over a period
of time in order to meet established goals. Therefore, the 4-H handler must have been the primary
trainer of the dog during the 2011-2012 4-H year.
Registration and entry forms must be completed and submitted in a timely manner. All 4-Hers entering
the Virginia State 4-H Dog Show must have completed and submitted a Virginia 4-H Dog Project Book to
their county Extension Agents prior to registering for the Virginia 4-H State Dog Show. Extension Agents
may only sign and submit entry forms if a Project Book has been received even if the 4-Her will be not be
entering the Virginia 4-H State Dog Show Project Book Competition. Please prepare well ahead and
allow time for your Extension Agent to sign your registration form. Registration packets should be
mailed to the Virginia 4-H Office with a postmark no later than Friday, August 24, 2012.
All dogs entered in the dog show must show proof of current rabies vaccination at time of entry. Rabies
tags will not be accepted; a veterinary statement showing rabies expiration date is required.
Female dogs in season should not attend the show.

The Dude Ranch is a dog training facility with two fully matted indoor rings and two outdoor rings.
There will be space for some indoor crating. Show grooming is not allowed in the building and must be

SHOW SAFETY, RULES & ETIQUETTE
Dogs that attempt to attack a person or another dog on the grounds or appear to be dangerous
will be excused from the event. Dogs must be either crated or kept under control on-leash at all times
except when otherwise directed by the judge. Dogs violating this rule will be excused. Dogs must be
kept in the Dog Show area and are not permitted elsewhere on the premises. NO UNATTENDED DOGS

Please come prepared to clean up after your dog.
Prong collars, gentle leaders, retractable leads, or flexi-leads are not allowed on the show grounds.
Absolutely no coaching by persons outside the ring (signaling movements or commands directed to a
handler or dog being shown) is allowed.
SCHEDULING CONFLICTS
There may be unavoidable scheduling conflicts for handlers entered in more than one event. 4-Hers are
responsible for notifying and making arrangements with the ring stewards regarding any conflicts in
or to facilitate the smooth flow of events. Given adequate notification, judges and ring stewards will
make best effort to be accommodating when scheduling conflicts.
LUNCH
Please bring your lunch, snacks and beverages (extra water is vital for humans and dogs) or be prepared
to purchase your food and drinks from the on-site vendor. Time for lunch is limited, so please be aware
and plan accordingly as afternoon competitions will start promptly according to the schedule.
STANDARD SCORING SYSTEM
The standard system of scoring is a ranking system. Recognition given for results from peer
competition is an outgrowth of the early European tradition of desire and motivation to be the
best. This type of recognition is given through competitive programs or contests in which
members' knowledge or skills, or the products they produce, are compared and ranked with
others. An overall ranking 1st- 4th place will be determined in each class and placement
ribbons will be awarded. All others will receive ribbons for participation. The Standard
System of Scoring will be used for overall placement in the categories of Showmanship,
Obedience, Rally Obedience, and Agility.
Danish System will be used for Costume and Project Books with the addition of Standard System of
Scoring for 1st - 4th placements.
4-H TROPHIES
5
There are several trophies available for award this year. These awards will be given in both the Junior
(ages 9 to 13) and Senior (ages 14 to 19) Divisions to handlers who have been training more than one
year. In each Division, the handler and dog with the highest point score combined in the three classes of
Obedience, Rally Obedience and Showmanship will win the 2012 Sue Coleman Top Dog Award.
Similarly, in each Division, the handler and dog with the highest point score combined in the two classes
of Jumpers Agility and Standard Agility will win the 2012 Virginia 4-H Agility Award.
FIRST YEAR HANDLER TROPHIES
Recognition given for participation in educational experiences is valued by all youth, and appreciating
participation in any phase of 4-H can be a first step in building a positive self-concept.
These awards are to foster participation in all phases of the Virginia 4-H State Dog Show by
handlers entering for the first time. The First Year Handler Trophies will be given in both the Junior
(ages 9 to 13) and Senior (ages 14 to 19) Divisions to handlers who have been training their dog one year
or less. In each Division, the first year handler and dog with the highest point score combined in the
three classes of Obedience, Rally Obedience and Showmanship will win the 2012 First Year Handler
Obedience Award. Similarly, in each Division, the first year handler and dog with the highest point score
combined in the two classes of Jumpers Agility and Standard Agility will win the 2012 Virginia First Year
Handler 4-H Agility Award.
Please note: Placements in Project Book and Costume classes, and other fun competitions and games
are not calculated in the Trophy awards.
4-H SHOWMANSHIP JUDGING
1) Classes will be divided into two (2) divisions, Junior (ages 9 to 13) and Senior (ages 14 to
19). Ages for classes will be the entrant’s age as of September 30 of the current 4-H year (2012).
Each division will be divided into two (2) classes, Novice and Open.
Novice classes are for those competitors who have not won three (3) or more First
Place awards in showmanship competition in any show such as 4-H, AKC, UKC,

be given to any breed nor will the show qualities of the dogs be considered.
3) The first place winners in each of the four classes (Novice Junior, Novice Senior, Open Junior, Open

class standings before ribbons are awarded.
Judging criteria:
6
DOG PRESENTATION 30 POINTS
Handler should control and show the dog to its best advantage, using
proper breed procedure, both when stacked and in motion. Handler should
present the dog in a quiet, efficient manner and with economy of motion.
Handler should never distract nor interfere with the judge’s vision of the
dog. The judge will excuse any handler that, in his/her opinion, cannot
properly control their dog.
RING PROCEDURE 25 POINTS
Handler should follow directions, use space wisely and execute gaiting
pattern as directed.
DOG GROOMING 10 POINTS
Dog should be groomed and trimmed to show its best lines and coat. Nails
should be trimmed. Dog should be clean.
APPEARANCE 10 POINTS
Handler should be suitably dressed in clothes that will not hinder nor
distract from dog’s overall presentation. Handler’s hair should be neat, not
obscuring face nor eyes. Nothing about the handler’s appearance should
draw negative attention.
RING CONDUCT 10 POINTS
Handler should appear prepared, confident and attentive, always displaying good sportsmanship.
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE 15 POINTS
Handler should be knowledgeable about his/her dog, dog anatomy, and/or
breed specific questions. Judge should ask no more than three (3) questions,
which may increase in difficulty with age and experience of the class. Each
handler will be asked the same predetermined number of questions.
OBEDIENCE JUDGING
Current AKC Obedience Regulations (http://www.akc.org/rules/) generally apply and AKC score sheets
(http://www.akc.org/events/obedience/judges_books_score_sheets.cfm) will be used. However,
some adaptations of the rules have been made for the 4-H Program, as follows:
- If a dog fouls in the ring, the judge may allow the handler to finish the exercises. The handler will be
asked to clean up after his/her dog. A steward may assist if necessary.
- Partial points may be given for sits and stays at the Judge's discretion.
- If a dog breaks on the long sit and/or long down, but remains stationary (for example lies down during
the long sit or sits up during the long stay), the handler must not approach the dog and no correction
should be made as a courtesy to the other participants. If a dog breaks on the long sit and/or long down
and moves towards its handler, the dog must not be corrected or put back in place, but instead should
7
be brought to sit or down quietly directly in front of the handler in line with all the other handlers until
the exercise is finished. If a handler returns to correct his/her dog, s/he will be excused and receive a
non-qualifying score.
- Dogs entered for "Exhibition Only" for any reason will be limited to receiving a Participation ribbon.

judged by the criteria established on the Level 1 Exercises in the 2012 NADAC Beginners Agility Program

handler show treats or toys to the dog and give a reward.
Dogs may be praised and put back on leash in between exercises.
Scoring: Passing all nine exercises will earn a ribbon.
AGILITY COMPETITIONS
Current American Kennel Club rules generally apply. Please check the AKC website for further
information (http://www.akc.org/events/agility/) and read the below rules and regulations carefully.
Some adaptations of the rules and regulations have been made for the 4-H Program, as follows:
There will be three competitive classes of Agility: Beginner Jumpers, Jumpers and Standard.
There will be two divisions of Agility within each class: Junior and Senior. Courses will be the
same for each division.
There will be three skill levels within each class: Novice, Open, and Excellent.
The minimum useable course area will be at least 5000 square feet and at least 60-feet wide for
all competitive classes except Beginner Jumpers.
Minimal obstacle requirements per class and skill level will be as stated below.
Jump Heights will be 4”, 8”, 12”, 16” and 20” but for award purposes there will be only
two (2) height categories within each division: Small and Large. Small dogs are those jumping 4”,
8” and 12”. Large dogs are those jumping 16” and 20.”
Jump height should be designated on the entry form, but may be adjusted in the morning at
general check-in or at the gate check-in at the discretion of the judge. Jump heights will be
determined as follows: Measure dog at the highest point of the withers (shoulder).
o Dogs 11” and under: jump height = 8”
o Dogs 14” and under: jump height = 12”
o Dogs 18” and under: jump height = 16”
o All dogs over 18” jump height = 20”
Handlers may request an adjustment in their dog’s jump height based on their dog’s
health, age, or breed.
Beginner Jumpers Class dogs will run one jump level lower than heights listed above.
If temperatures are above 90 degrees F at the time of the event, all jump heights may be
lowered by one level at the discretion of the judge. For example, short breeds such as
dachshunds or corgis may jump 4”. Please make your request on your entry form. Final jump
height decisions will be made by the agility registrar and/or the judge.
Equipment dimensions and heights will strive to approximate AKC regulation with the following
exceptions: the A-frame will be no more than approximately 5 feet high at the apex; the dog
walk planks may be either 8 feet or 12 feet in length; the height of the seesaw at the fulcrum
will be no more than approximately 20 inches; the height of the pause table will be 8 inches for
dogs running in the small dog jump height category and 16 inches for dogs running in the large
dog jump height category; the length of the fabric chute of a closed tunnel will be approximately
11
6 feet; the weave poles will be a 6 pole set; the tire jump will be a breakaway design; wing
jumps will not be required in the course but maybe used based on availability.
All obstacle positions as well as approach angles are to be determined solely at the discretion of
the judge in order to facilitate ease of course flow.
Fouling in the ring will result in 20-point penalty at all levels of competition. Scoring stops if the
dog leaves the ring; however, dogs will retain the points earned up to the point of leaving the
ring and will be eligible for all awards.
General Requirements and Rules:
Dogs entered in any agility class must be one (1) year old or older.
No dog may be entered in more than one skill level per class.
All dogs must wear a flat buckle or quick snap collar with no tags and run without a leash. Tab
leashes are not permitted.
Handlers will be provided with a course map and allowed at least a 10 minute walkthrough
without dogs prior to the start of each class.
A gated warm up area with one single bar jump will be provided in the vicinity of the agility
rings.
All divisions and classes will be run together with awards determined after completion.
A clean run with no faults will score 100 points.
All runs will be timed. The judge on the recommendation of the Dog Show Agility Chairperson
will set a maximum ring time for any one run by class to facilitate completion of the event.
The dog with the highest score wins. In the event of a tie, speed will break the tie.
Use of food, clicker, and other training devices are not allowed, though treats may be carried in
the Beginner Jumpers Class only.
AKC rules will be followed regarding performance on contact obstacles: the dog must touch the
contact zone only on the down side with any part of one foot prior to exiting the obstacle. On
the seesaw, at least one paw must touch the “down” contact zone after the plank has touched
the ground and prior to exiting the obstacle with all four (4) paws.

Handlers may wear a treat pouch with treats inside or have treats in their pockets during the run, but no
treats may be shown or given to the dog until the Finish line has been crossed by the dog.

16
The mission of 4-H is to assist youth, and adults working with those youth, to gain additional
knowledge, improve life and content skills, and increase attitudes to develop youth who are self-
directing, contributing, and productive members of society. Without strong involvement and
support from caring adults, it is difficult for 4-H to nurture a solid foundation for positive youth
development.
Encouraging family involvement in 4-H is a high priority. Parents are a vital part of the 4-H
experience. Their cooperation and participation are essential to the development of their child.
Parents bear the primary responsibility for meeting the needs of their children. 4-H develops and
delivers programs that are designed to enhance, the role of the family. The relationship between
