                              ADVISOR VERIFICATION FORM
The majority of applications and awards have now been placed online for the 2010 – 2011 school year.
Many of the awards and applications still require signatures from various schools officials. This form will
be used for the following applications and awards:

      VA DECA Honor Society
      Merit Award

Chapter Advisors only need to complete one form per application year.

                           VA DECA HONOR SOCIETY AWARDS
The Virginia DECA Honor Society was developed to recognize outstanding, active DECA members who
have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and who have excelled in their
work and in their marketing classes. The award is designed to acknowledge academic achievement and
DECA involvement. Only a select few will achieve this distinction.

Refer to the guidelines below to clarify who in your chapter may qualify. There is no limit as to the
number of members who can be nominated from your chapter for this award.

New members of the Virginia DECA Honor Society will be recognized in the program at the upcoming
State Leadership Conference. VA DECA Honor Society certificates will be inserted into the recipient
school’s SLC folder and may be retrieved by the advisor at the conclusion of the conference.

Guidelines
To become a DECA Honor Society member, a DECA member must meet the following requirements:
    The applicant must be a junior or senior who is enrolled in a marketing course.
    The applicant must submit one letter of recommendation
    A verification form must be signed by the advisor.
    The applicant must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.2, as verified with an
       official transcript from the school’s guidance. Transcript must be from the conclusion of the
       previous school year.
    The applicant must be active in a majority of DECA activities.
    Completed applications and attachments must be received no later than the date specified on the
       calendar.
    Applications must be completed online.

Applicants do not have to attend to qualify for acceptance into the society.

                                   VA DECA MERIT AWARDS
Virginia DECA is comprised of many outstanding members who deserve recognition. The Merit Award
recognizes outstanding participation and leadership in Virginia DECA. Eligibility is based on membership
and meeting the guidelines below. Refer to the membership formula below for the maximum number of
students eligible.

Qualified members will be recognized in the program for the upcoming State Leadership conference.
Merit Award certificates will be inserted into the recipient school’s SLC folder and may be retrieved by
the advisor by the advisor at the conclusion of the Conference.

Applicants do not have to attend to qualify for acceptance to submit a Merit Award application. Those
not in attendance will have their awards inserted into their school’s SLC folder, and may be retrieved by
the advisor at the conclusion of the conference.
Typed/word processed applications must be received by the SLC registration date as specified in Section
A. Applications received after that date will not be considered.

Membership Formula:               11-24 members                        1 Award
                                  25-40 members                        2 Awards
                                  41-60 members                        3 Awards
                                  61-80 members                        4 Awards
                                  (Continue in multiples of 20)

Guidelines
To receive a Virginia DECA Merit Award, a member must:

1. Complete at least two years of Marketing or be a graduating senior in Marketing

2. Have been involved in at least three of the following DECA activities:

      Virginia DECA Day
      Membership development
      Officer (chapter or DP)
      Chapter activities program
      Community service project
      Virginia DECA Newsletter article/DECA Dimensions article
      Competitive events
      Annual report (any activity)

3. Complete the Merit Award application online.

4. A verification form must be signed by the advisor.

5. Write a 250-500 word, typed essay on “How will you use the knowledge and skills you gained in
marketing and DECA in developing your career aspirations and goals?”.

6. Mail Virginia DECA Merit Award supporting materials as directed to: Sharon W. Acuff, Marketing

VA DECA POW AWARDS DESCRIPTIONS


Virginia DECA Advisor Catalyst Award Nomination

Application is available online.

Please provide contributions the Advisor has made to VA DECA. List specific contributions and the
benefits and results from each which qualify the person to be a recipient of the Advisor Catalyst Award.
Nominees will be in the SLC program and one advisor will be selected for the award received at SLC.



VIRGINIA DECA Chapter Officer/District President Diamond Award Nomination

Application is available online.

The Diamond Award recognizes a chapter officer or district president for outstanding service. List
specific contributions this individual has made to the chapter or district. Nominees will be in the SLC
program and one officer will be selected for the award received at SLC.



VIRGINIA DECA Friends of DECA Award Nomination

Application is available online.

The Fiends of DECA Award recognizes an individual or business that supports DECA and Marketing
Education at the local level. Nominees will be in the SLC program. One business will win the award but
does not need to be present to win.

                      VA DECA Board Advisor Recognition Award

Sponsored by DECA, Inc., Virginia DECA will recognize all DECA chapter advisors who are actively involved in
DECA and related teaching activities. Attached is a list of Virginia approved activities with point values attached to
each. To earn the Outstanding DECA Chapter Advisor Award, an advisor must earn a total of 230 points. For the
2010-2011 school year, points will begin to accumulate at the 2010 SLC and end just prior to SLC 2011. Advisors
who accumulate the required number of points will submit a brief application (below) to Virginia DECA to show
their participation in each activity. Qualifying chapter advisors will earn a lapel pin and certificate from DECA, Inc.
and a plaque from Virginia DECA recognizing their achievement. Each recipient will be recognized at the State
Leadership Conference in 2011.
