Minutes of November 4, 2009 Meeting
President Bob Trump called the meeting to order (mostly) at 6:34PM. The following members
were present during the meeting: Rich Bray, Hugo Ehret, Jack Ford, Gordon Goff, John
McCarthy, Ron Meskimen, Jim Mount, Ed Mularz, Ray Nieder, Dick Oldberg, Mary Oldberg,
Rey Olson, Dick Putney, Jim Thompson, John Thut, Iris Trumbull, Robert Trumbull, Bob
Trump, Laura Trump, Jan Verschuur, Michael Wilhelm, and Terry Wilhelm.
Dick Putney moved and Dick Oldberg seconded a motion to accept the minutes of the
October 7, 2009 meeting that were so ably prepared by Ray Nieder. Thanks Ray! The
Robert Trumbull presented the Treasurer’s Report. Jim Thompson moved and Mary Oldberg
seconded the motion to receive the Treasurer’s Report. The motion passed.
Show and Tell
Jan Verschuur showed a 1947 Marklin Train set that he purchased at an antique shop in
Lyons. Dick Oldberg reported on the A.C. Gilbert Heritage Society and their quarterly
magazine. Dick observed that the erector sets and associated memorabilia help him to enjoy
his second childhood. John Thut showed an On30 steam loco where he is installing a DCC
decoder and sound module. It was a Colorado and Southern 2-6-0 Mogul locomotive, that
will be run on the clubs proposed new modular layout. John explained how he does a typical
DCC conversion and that there will be Modeling with the Modelers sessions at his house for
members who want to learn more.
Election in December
Rich Bray reported on the work of the Nominating Committee for the club’s officers for 2010.
The candidates are as follows: President – Bob Trump; Vice President – John Thut;
Secretary – John McCarthy and Jack Ford; Treasurer – Robert Trumbull. The election for
Club officers will be at the December 2nd meeting which is our Christmas Party.
Laura Trump entered a pizza layout featuring an On30 Porter complete with DCC and sound.
John Thut did the DCC and sound installation with some assistance from Robert Trumbull and
Bob Trump. The layout was a Christmas winter scene with ice skating pond and ceramic
figures. John Thut entered his N scale large Pizza layout. It featured DCC sound equipped
locomotives running in opposite directions and a very nice town scene. Michael Wilhelm
entered the only shoebox layout of the contest. His layout came in three shoe boxes and
featured an O scale sound equipped Great Northern Lionel train running on an oval track. All
three entries won first place in their class. Each entrant was awarded a scale rule for entering
the contest and an additional award for winning. Award choices included $25 gift certificates
from John Thut’s DCC Hobby Supply, a rotary tool set, hobby knives, etc.
The Photo Contest winners were chosen by popular vote. The result was a three-way tie for
first place. Ray Nieder showed several pictures of trains, including one great shot of the train
station at Edinburgh, Scotland. Gordon Goff showed pictures of his recent acquisitions for his
G scale layout. Rich Bray showed on his Apple computer his favorite railroad pictures that he
has taken. The entrants received a scale rule and their choice of awards for winning.
Laura Trump presented a food sign-up sheet for the club’s Christmas Party, which will be held
starting at 5:30PM on December 2nd at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 880 MacGregor
Road. If you missed signing up at the meeting, please telephone Laura at 577-0343. Also,
please contact Laura if you can help with set up activities at Rails in the Rockies.
Bob Trump announced that Modeling with the Modelers will continue at the Oldberg's for
members who want to learn more scenery techniques. However, we will need a volunteer to
schedule the meetings when a facilitator is available. Anyone that is well experienced in
scenery techniques can be a facilitator.
