Philadelphia
One of the most historic cities in the US, Philadelphia was the nation’s capital from 1790–1800, and it is where the Declaration of Independence was signed and where the Constitution of the United States was written. The ELP is located in Philadelphia, a city that has a population of 1.8 million, making it the fifth largest city in the US. Philadelphia is a city of many neighborhoods, and this makes it seem like a small town. The city’s historic, artistic, and commercial centers are located a short distance from the University of Pennsylvania.

With guidance from the Student Center, students can take part in neighborhood clean-ups, food drives, tutoring and many other important initiatives. • Wireless Internet: Wireless internet is available in most campus buildings and housing types. • Penn Card Access: ELP students receive an identification card that permits them to use Penn’s academic and recreational facilities or services such as: 15 libraries; computer labs with Internet access; gymnasiums with exercise and weight-lifting rooms, and indoor courts for playing tennis, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, and squash; indoor swimming pools, saunas, and steam rooms; ice skating rink in winter and free campus bus service.
Dining
ELP students have a variety of dining options available to them. Some students eat on campus in dining halls while other students buy their meals at restaurants and vendors that are located all over campus. Some students cook meals in their rooms or apartments. Penn operates a free bus that goes from campus to local supermarkets several times a week. Philadelphia also has many ethnic grocery stores that carry imported food items.
Health Services
The United States does not have a national medical plan, so most people purchase private insurance policies to cover serious medical conditions. The University of Pennsylvania offers a medical insurance policy that all full-time student visa holders (F-1 or J-1) must purchase. Insurance for spouses and dependents is also available for an additional fee. Full-time students not on a F-1 or J-1 visa must provide proof of personal health insurance coverage. Part-time students are strongly encouraged to hold personal health insurance coverage. In addition, ELP students in some programs may use the Student Health Service. Student Health provides routine examinations and treats minor injuries.
Visas
The ELP issues the Form I-20 for the student (F-1) visa for full-time study in selected programs. Other visa options may be available; please see program details for specific information about visa requirements. Because of US visa regulations, applicants who wish to receive a I-20 form from the ELP are urged to apply early (at least 6 weeks before you plan to begin your studies) and to consult the ELP website (www.sas.upenn.edu/elp) or contact the ELP for advice and information about applying for their student visa.
Housing
Several types of accommodations are available to ELP students. These include rooms on campus in the ELP House at the Sheraton, rooms in the nearby Stratum on 36th Street or International House, homestay experiences with American families, and corporate housing and hotels. During the summer, housing in dormitories is also available for some programs. Please note that while the ELP makes every effort to ensure that housing is available to students, students are responsible for securing their own housing. For more information and to download the ELP Housing Form, please go to the ELP website: www.sas.upenn.edu/ elp/housing.
“The Student Center is the place where students can relax. It is educational, social and, an entertaining place. Moreover, there are activities that go on almost every day. My favorites are the social activities and trips every weekend.”
