Southern New England Music Programs
In The Salvation Army Southern New England Division, the arts are flourishing vividly. Young people from Connecticut and Rhode Island are coming together to expand their talents and receive instruction in their designated performing arts genre while also increasing their knowledge of the Lord. Southern New England programs offer various outlets for developing artistic skills for the young and ‘seasoned’ alike. Our students have many options to choose from when deciding which programs and classes to participate in.

History of Music in The Salvation Army…
In 1878 Charles Fry took his 3 sons and formed a brass quartet. They played during an outdoor meeting in Salisbury, England. William Booth, The Salvation Army’s founder heard them and started to use them in his services. This was the beginning of the Salvation Army brass banding. There are many outstanding brass bands in The Salvation Army now a days. The New York Staff Band is centered in New York with members from all over the tri state area. All the musicians are members of The Salvation Army church. The other band is the International Staff Band which is centered in London, England. Again, made up of church members. There are also well known singing groups. Today, you will find worship teams, dance teams, and drama troupes in many of the community worship centers around Southern New England and throughout the world. William Booth once was quoted as saying…“Why should the devil have all the good music?”
History of The Salvation Army
In 1865, William Booth, an ordained Methodist minister, aided by his wife Catherine, formed an evangelical group dedicated to preaching to people living in appalling poverty in London’s East End. In addition to preaching, Booth became involved in the feeding and sheltering of the hungry and homeless and in the rehabilitation of alcoholics. The basic social services developed by William Booth have remained an outward, visible expression of the Army’s strong religious principles. In addition, programs that address contemporary needs have been established. Among these are disaster relief services, child care centers, summer camps, holiday assistance, services for the aging, shelters for women and children, family and career counseling, substance abuse rehabilitation, and many music programs.
