DIVERSITY ACTION PLAN
This Diversity Action Plan is to be revised and updated on an annual basis and should be referred to in
conjunction with the 2007-2008 Diversity Policy. This Action Plan has been created as a result of the
Gallery’s ongoing foundation work integrating diversity within the organisation.
YEAR 1
Objectives: October 2007 – October 2008
1. Monitoring & Marketing:
ISSUE identified -
To streamline the monitoring of the gallery’s audiences, participants and artists in order to establish who currently
attends the gallery and those whom the organisation needs to work more with.
ACTION –
Combined audience development / research project with Audience Development South East (ADSE).

2. Exhibitions:
ISSUE identified –
To create more opportunities for deaf and disabled artists to create and exhibit work with the John Hansard Gallery.
ACTION –
Offsite ‘Go-Make’ artist residency at the WEA (Workers Education) Clovelly Centre with Disability Arts Development
Agency – South (Dada-South) and Southampton City Council. This project is part supported by an Awards for All grant.
The Clovelly Centre is based in St. Mary’s which has a large minority ethnic community. This project also aims to
promote disability awareness and equality within minority ethnic communities.
3. Education:
ISSUE identified –
a). Create more learning opportunities in partnership with Wessex youth Offending Team (WYOT) for young offenders
on Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programmes (ISSP), through delivery of the Arts Awards, which (as an
outcome of the WYOT Arts Summer College in July 2007 which the Gallery was involved in) has proven to help reduce
or stop repeat offending.
b). Develop and implement the Gallery’s first community cohesion related project, which embeds our continued work on
promoting race equality in the Southampton North area.

ACTIONS –
a). Work on a year long project delivering the Arts Awards for young people on ISSP through WYOT.
b). Delivery of the Community Cohesion / Race Equality CONNECTPort project, creating an animation led by project
artist Elroy Simmons, in collaboration with Swaythling Youth Centre and the Swaythling Neighbourhood Centre Over
50s Club, exploring the Port City exhibition looking at issues of mobility, migration and contemporary slavery. Project
funded by the University of Southampton.
4. Governance:
ISSUE identified –
To ensure that all new staff joining the organisation during October 07 – January 08 have an understanding of diversity
and how it relates to the Gallery’s own policy and way of working.
ACTION –
Delivery of equal opportunities training for new staff (to be recruited this year) and update on Diversity Policies.
