FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS CONCERNING SPORTS FEES
Q. Toward what do sports fees go?
A. To cover expenses associated with operating each sport (e.g. coaches’ salaries,
officials, transportation, uniforms, equipment, etc.).
Q. By paying the sports fee, is playing time guaranteed for athletes?
A. No. There is no guarantee of any playing time for any athlete, even before there
was a sports fee.
Q. Can the Boosters, other groups, or other individuals pay for an athlete’s sports fee?
A. Yes. That decision is the responsibility of each group.
Q. Can donations be made to a specific athlete or team to offset sports fee expenses?
A. Yes. However, direct payment to the district is the preferred method; State
eligibility concerns may arise if done otherwise. The payment cannot exceed the
sports fee amount, unless it is a donation to offset sports fee expenses.
Q. Can a payment be made directly to the parents of an athlete?
A. Yes. As long as the payment is not more than the determined fee and used solely
for the sports fee, this will not affect the athlete’s State eligibility.
Q. Can an individual or business, besides parents, guardians, or relatives, pay for an
athlete’s sports fee?
A. Yes. This will not affect an athlete’s State eligibility.
Q. Would the parents of an athlete who receive financial assistance through an
individual have to claim this as income?
A. No. It is considered a non-taxable gift.
Q. May a student tryout for a team who did not originally tryout due to an injury?
A. If the student meets the criteria and there is an opening on the team, the student
will be permitted to tryout. There is no guarantee they will be added to the team
and the sports fee must be paid in full by the regular season deadline.
Q. May a student join a team after the first practice, if they are new to the district?
A. Yes. They may join as long as they meet all of the following criteria:
Bona fide change of residence into the district,
GPA meets Board requirements,
The sports fee is paid in full, and, most importantly,
The student was a member of the previous district’s team.
