EMDRIA Chapter
Directory
of
EMDR
Trained
Clinicians
Tenth Edition –
March 2011
March 21, 2011
Welcome to the Tenth Edition of the Directory of EMDR Trained Clinicians in Western
Massachusetts. For those of you using this for the first time, we have done our best to
structure it in a very user friendly way. This updated Directory lists 71 clinicians who have
completed the basic two-part EMDR training and who chose to be listed. This Directory is
available in hard copy and online at www.wmassemdria.com. Click on "EMDR Directory"
and then "Complete Directory in PDF." Additionally, I am excited to announce that the
online directory is now interactive! Go to www.wmassemdria.com, click on "EMDR
Directory" and then "Online Directory Search." The online directory is fully searchable by
the indexes listed below, and clinicians will be updating their listings throughout the year.
Additional therapists may be added to the online directory.
In this print edition, you can look for an EMDR trained therapist in several ways. We have
created FIVE INDEXES. You can see if someone is listed in the Directory by NAME, and if
they are, go to their alphabetical listing to read their information. You can also begin by
seeing if there are clinicians in your CITY OR TOWN, or nearby. There are different levels of
ADVANCED TRAINING and certification in EMDR.
You can also check by your INSURANCE. We have listed more than 50 different insurances.
You can begin by seeing who accepts your insurance and cross-reference with the list by
city, and go on to read their descriptions and how they describe their work.
You can also start with, or cross-reference, the index by CLINICAL SPECIALTY. You can easily
find which therapists could work with your child or adolescent, or provide couples/marriage
therapy, specialize in depression or anxiety, etc. Therapists chose up to ten categories of
specialization.
We are grateful for an exceptionally vibrant EMDR community in Western Mass, one of the
strongest in the country. Much of the credit for this goes to our Regional Chairperson, Mark
Nickerson. Mark and our Conference Planning Committee will be putting on our seventh
annual All Day Event in April 2011. We have a listserve with 300 members. Our EMDRIA
approved consultants offer a variety of consultation groups, workshops, and study groups.
On behalf of the Western Mass EMDR community, I want to share our delighted
appreciation to all those clinicians who chose to be listed and to Lynn Valle for creating this
Tenth Edition in an efficient way. Additionally, I would like to thank Mark Nickerson, Jason
Rose-Langston and Ryan Turner for their creativity and web savvy in designing this year's
online directory. Jason, Ryan, Lynn and Mark have worked hard to bring this directory to
completion with their teamwork and commitment. Hundreds of therapists and clients will
again benefit this year from their work and our Directory.
In the spirit and practice of healing,
Farnsworth E. Lobenstine, LICSW

About EMDR
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an approach to psychotherapy
that has been practiced in the US and around the world for the past 20 years. Aspects of EMDR
are unique: In particular, the therapist leads a patient in a series of lateral eye movements
while the patient simultaneously focuses on various aspects of a disturbing memory. During this
procedure, patients tend to "process" the memory in a way that leads to a peaceful resolution.
This often involves new learning about the self and often new learning about a previously
disturbing event. For instance an assault victim may come to realize that he was not to blame
for what happened, that the event is really over, and that he can safely go on with life. Or, a
person who has been abandoned by a spouse may come to realize that she is loveable and that
she has undiscovered possibilities. EMDR is applicable for a wide range of psychological
problems that result from overwhelming life experiences. The left – right eye movements in
EMDR are a form of "bilateral stimulation." Other forms of bilateral stimulation used by EMDR
therapists include alternating bilateral sound, using headphones, and alternating tactile
simulation, using a handheld device that vibrates or taps to the back of the patient's hands.
The therapeutic effects of bilateral stimulation were discovered by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., who
grasped their power in psychotherapy. Dr. Shapiro found—quite by accident—that emotional
and behavioral symptoms resulting from disturbing experiences tend to resolve naturally when
a person allows him/ herself to recall various elements of a memory while engaging in bilateral
stimulation such as lateral eye-movements. Dr. Shapiro and her associates developed a number
of procedures for coordinating this "dual awareness." The procedures have been refined and
validated through controlled research at several centers around the world. Precise and careful
use of these procedures can lead to a safe processing of memories, such that the negative
thoughts and emotions disappear.
More than a set of "techniques," the EMDR approach provides a model for understanding
human potential, including how positive experiences support adaptive living, or psychological
health, and how upsetting experiences can sometimes lead to psychological problems that
interfere with a person's ability to meet life challenges. The Adaptive Information Processing
(AIP) Model has been constructed from observations of many people in states of psychological
health and dysfunction. The model reveals that health is supported by positive and successful
experiences that increasingly prepare a person to handle new challenges. However, some
experiences can be so upsetting that a person's brain cannot process them normally. Such
memories become stuck and then drive psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, depression,
and problem behaviors. The AIP model guides a clinician's use of EMDR procedures so that the
person's own brain can complete the processing of memories. This results in the reduction of
suffering and symptoms and the development of new learnings that support psychological
health.
It is very important that EMDR procedures be guided by a fully trained EMDR clinician, who also
holds licensure in one of several mental health fields. Patients often require special preparation
for EMDR processing. Premature or other improper use of the procedures can lead to
significant distress and worsening of symptoms in some patients.

Looking for an EMDR Therapist?
For the past few years therapists in our region have been using the Western Massachusetts
EMDRIA Chapter’s Directory of EMDR Trained Clinicians, as a resource for referrals. The
Western Mass. EMDRIA Regional Steering Committee has now made this resource available to
the public via this website. One of the many special features of this Directory is that it lists
therapists according to the insurances they accept. Since not all therapists accept the same
insurances, this feature can shorten your search. We invite you to use the Directory to locate an
EMDR therapist for yourself or for another person. But first…
A Few Words about the Names in this Directory
It is possible that you will find an excellent EMDR therapist in any of the names appearing in the
Directory. However, the Western Mass. EMDRIA Regional Steering Committee does not assure
or in any way assume responsibility for quality of professional services provided by any
therapist listed in this Directory of EMDR Trained Clinicians. All therapists in the Directory are
licensed to provide psychotherapy. And all clinicians here appearing attest to having completed
Parts 1 & 2 of the basic EMDR training as approved by the EMDR International Association
(EMDRIA). All trained EMDR therapists are strongly encouraged to seek consultation beyond
their basic training, and many do so. A number of these clinicians have gone on to become
certified by EMDRIA; some have become EMDRIA-approved consultants, EMDR Institute
training facilitators, and/or EMDRIA-approved trainers. Each additional step in this progression
indicates further study, experience, training, and supervised practice.
Choosing a Good EMDR Therapist for You
The Western Mass. EMDRIA Regional Steering Committee recommends the following steps in
choosing a good therapist:
1) Ask for time to interview a prospective clinician—by phone or in person.
2) Ask about the therapist’s experience with EMDR.
3) Ask about their experience treating the type of situation you would bring to therapy.
4) Choose a therapist who is experienced with EMDR and who has a good success rate.
5) Be sure the therapist is comfortable in treating your particular problem.
6) It is important that you feel a sense of trust and rapport with a therapist.

Our professional association, the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), has developed ways of certifying
levels of advanced training in the use of EMDR. Our Directory only includes therapists who have completed both
parts of the basic training. We list here these certification categories to help perspective clients or referring
clinicians know relative levels of individual and small group structure learning beyond the basic training.
Consultants
We are fortunate to have two locally-based EMDRIA Approved Trainers: George Abbott and Ricky Greenwald, and
eight EMDR Facilitators. Trainers provide the 50-hour required instruction for basic training in EMDR. Facilitators
provide the hands-on small group practice of EMDR in Part 1 and Part 2 trainings. All of them are also EMDRIA
Approved Consultants.
EMDRIA Approved Consultants are EMDRIA Certified therapists who have received 20 additional hours of
consultation on the process of teaching EMDR trained clinicians to refine their skills in the use of EMDR. They lead
EMDR trained therapists through the process of becoming EMDRIA Certified Clinicians.

EMDRIA Certified Clinicians
EMDRIA Certified Clinicians have received 20 hours of consultation on their EMDR work with clients after they
completed the two-part basic training in EMDR. They submitted letters of recommendation from their consultants
and peers and attested to having done a total of at least 50 sessions using the EMDR protocol with at least 25
different clients. They must complete at least 12 hours of EMDRIA approved training every two years.

The following is a list of Massachusetts health insurance companies. In addition, many insurance companies will pay
therapists out of network. The client is responsible for checking with his/her insurance company for details.
Therapists were asked to list insurances that routinely paid them out of network – this is designated with "OON" in
the list below. Out of Network usually means more limited benefits and higher copays or initial deductibles.

I specialize in the treatment of problems that result from disturbing life experiences. I take the view that people heal
naturally when the the proper circumstances exist. Accordingly, psychotherapy means bringing about those
circumstances. I chiefly use Eye-movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), as it is the most efficient and
"user friendly" way that I know to help set the stage for healing --whether a person's disturbing experiences have
occurred recently or in the more distant past. In some situations, I employ clinical hypnosis, as influenced by the work of
Milton H. Erickson, MD. Another part of my professional work involves training other therapists in clinical hypnosis, and
in EMDR through the EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs. I am an approved consultant and trainer in EMDR.

I believe that a safe and trusting relationship is the foundation for depth in psychotherapy. In my practice I integrate a
relational psychodynamic perspective with family systems theory and cognitive behavioral strategies. Jungian Sandplay
therapy and EMDR are central to my practice because both of these methods allow clients to experience, understand,
and access the truth that within each of us lie the solutions to the challenges we face.

My core training is in a family systems therapy emphasizing effects of gender socialization. I am influenced by Michael
White's Narrative Therapy, appreciative of the attention paid to broader social contexts. An Asian American in a mixed
race family, I have worked with cross-cultural issues and the impact of racism on personal/family development. EMDR
has added a depth and sensitivity to this work and currently I am integrating this methodology with the "friendliness" of
mindfulness meditation.

I provide skilled and compassionate psychotherapy for adults and older adolescents who are dealing with anxiety,
depression, alcohol or drug use problems, relationship or parenting challenges, grief and loss, identity issues, or post-
traumatic stress symptoms. Feel free to contact me if you are having emotional, personal, work, or relationship
difficulties, and want a safe setting in which to address your problems. A clinical mental health counselor, I am a skilled
professional with many years of experience helping people work through unresolved issues from their pasts and live
fuller, more rewarding lives. I am a trained EMDR practitioner. This therapeutic approach is particularly useful for people
with histories of trauma, neglect, or abuse. It also helps anyone with painful self-beliefs or doubts which stem from
negative past experiences. I also have advanced training in psychosynthesis, a form of spiritual psychology. This
approach helps us learn to accept the seemingly disparate parts of ourselves. By accepting the complexity of our human
nature, and the truth of our personal experience, we grow in confidence, wisdom and compassion.

disruption, anxiety, and trauma on the developmental transitions of childhood. I adapt EMDR and Ego State work to the
needs of children. While I am especially comfortable with very young children and their families, I see kids of all ages as
well as adult individuals.

I have been in private practice over 25 years. I integrate many approaches, finding the right fit for each client. I create an
environment where clients feel safe, listened to, and supported so they can look at difficult issues. I am trained in
several models of EMDR, including April Steele's Secure Self and Shirley Jean Schmidt's Developmental needs meeting
Model. I incorporate Sensorimotor psychotherapy (SP) training, with it's focus on how the body holds trauma, and
developing internal resources, into my EMDR work. I work with adults in issues of trauma, depression, anxiety and self
esteem.

The findings of modern neuroscience are coming together with the practices of ancient traditions in the service of
people whose lives have been marked by experiences of extreme stress and loss. My work with clients is based on
scientific evidence, guided by traditional wisdom, and dedicated to the art of moving together toward balance,
realization and integration in the present moment. I specialize in working with adolescents and adults who have
26
experienced traumatic events, abuse, neglect or other kinds of profound loss. These people often have particular
difficulty maintaining balance and a sense of well-being in everyday life. Common problems range from depression and
anxiety to substance abuse, anger, difficulty in relationships, physical health problems and dissociation. People with
these kinds of complex posttraumatic difficulties often benefit from learning to use their minds and bodies as positive
resources for balancing their lives. A primary goal in treatment is to develop skills that can be used in the present
moment to connect to a sense of order, ease, spontaneity, and integration. I work with clients in a holistic way that
recognizes the complexity of the human stress response, promotes ongoing development across the lifespan, and
emphasizes the unity of the mind and body in adapting to life experience.

I have had a private practice in Northampton for over 20 years and have specialized in working with adolescents, men,
and women across the life cycle with a wide range of concerns. I am honored daily to witness clients consistently heal as
they access their wisdom and reprocess trauma through EMDR. It is through the strength of the therapy relationship
that people become empowered and learn to trust themselves. Trauma can be life changing in a positive way when the
work is deep and meaningful. I believe that what brings people to therapy brings people closer to themselves and those
they care about. When the therapy relationship is strong, supportive and healing, the healthy lasting change becomes
transforming.

I am primarily an EMDR therapist. I believe that most people suffer and struggle with depression, anxiety and other life
issues because of painful early life experiences that the brain was unable to process. These unprocessed memories
become "frozen in time" in the brain. Then when a current situation or event activates one of these memories, we
unknowingly react from one of our *child selves*, experiencing the thoughts, feelings and beliefs that we had at the
time of the original incident. The more old, stuck memories we have, the more we will misinterpret our everyday
experiences and relationships and the more difficulty we will have in our lives. EMDR enables the brain to reprocess
these frozen and stuck memories, and then store them correctly where they are meant to be stored in the brain. As old,
stuck memories are reprocessed, one by one, we are able to live more fully and consistently in our *adult* selves, and
experience the world and our relationships without distorting and misinterpreting them through the perceptions of a
child. The result is that we begin to live happier, more fulfilled and authentic lives.

I believe that within every human being is a core essence that is wise and whole. It is from this place that we can heal
and find joy, peace, fulfillment, courage, confidence, clarity, and connection. My work is to support people to discover
this inner wisdom; to serve as a gentle guide in the journey of Self-connection. My training in Internal Family Systems
enhances my capacity to be fully present on this journey. My experience in the relational/cultural approach to
women's/men's/cultural healing gives me experiential understanding of the impact of societal influences. My EMDR
training gives me tools to heal traumas of all kinds. I meet you with empathy, compassion, and acceptance, and together
we embark on a journey of healing.
