Smart Choices After School Program
The After School Program is a program that has been established and funded by the 21st Century High School After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens programs.(ASSETS) The purpose of the program is to create incentives for establishing locally driven after school enrichment programs that partner schools and communities to provide academic support and safe, constructive alternatives for high school pupils in the hours after regular school day, and that it may assist pupils in passing the high school exit examination. I. Three Program Elements 1. Academic Assistance 2. Enrichment 3. Family Literacy Services II. Academic Assistance 1. The academic assistance must be aligned with the pupils’ regular academic programs, and must assist students in meeting state and local academic achievement standards in core academic subjects, such as reading, mathematics, and science. A. CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) Prep B. Homework assistance C. College Preparation, (ie. Guidance or information about Cal Grants, field Trips) D. Reading Language Arts Activities. E. Mathematics and Science education activities. F. Tutoring services. G. Mentoring Programs. H. English learner activities. I. Expanded library hours.
III. Enrichment 1. The program must provide an enrichment element that offers participating students a broad array of additional services, programs, and activities that are designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program. A. Community Service B. Career/Technical education C. Job Readiness D. Mentoring Opportunities (with business and community partners). E. Tutoring younger pupils. F. Fine arts and music. G. Computer and Technology training. H. Youth Development I. Physical fitness J. Recreational Activities K. Leadership and entrepreneurial skills development. L. Coordinated school health services. M. Counseling, and character counts programs/ N. School safety including violence, drug, and tobacco prevention. IV. Family Literacy Services 1. Services provided to participants on a voluntary basis that are of sufficient intensity in hours and of sufficient duration to make a sustainable change in a family. A. Interactive literacy activities between parents and students. B. Training on how to be full partners in their student’s education. C. Age-appropriate education to prepare students for success in school. D. Adult education classes. E. Classes to help adult family members obtain their General Education Development. (GED). F. English language literacy classes. G. Employment and interview support classes. H. Expanded Literacy service hours. V. Scope of Operation 1. Operate a minimum of 15 hours per week. (3:00p.m-6:00p.m) 2. After school, and any combination of before school, weekends, summer intersession, vacation. 3. Staff ration is 20:1. 4. Students 9-12 grades
Course and Program Information
1. Algebra 1 Tutoring: Algebra 1 tutoring is strictly for students who are enrolled in an Algebra 1 course and who did not pass Benchmark with 70% or better. Students will be required to attend after school tutoring one day for two hours to review key concepts and retake benchmark. Grade will be adjusted if student’s grade improves, otherwise student will have to continue to attend tutoring until key concepts have been mastered, and score 70% or better. 2. Science Tutoring: Students who do not meet Science course requirements will attend after school tutoring one hour a week until mastery of science concept or specific work has been made up.
3. ELD Tutoring/Study Hall: All subject area tutoring targeting students in ELD, and study hall for all students needing a quiet place to study. 4. Math Tutorial-Tutoring in all Math areas, open to all students.
5. Soccer Tutorial/Agility Course-Students interested in taking part in the coming up soccer season will engage in study hall for 1 hour where they will get assistance with homework, in any core subject. The agility course is set up to provide students an opportunity to participate regularly in physical activity and achieve and maintain a health enhancing level of fitness. 6. ART: Art class offers students a place where they can create arts and crafts projects; they also have an opportunity to experience three dimensional art in a variety of mediums. Students will be encouraged to use art to build projects using cultural themes and develop self awareness in modern society.
7. Folkloric Dance: Folkloric dance class will help to increase and to develop the student’s knowledge of Hispanic Cultural heritage. 8. Salsa Dance: Salsa dance will help to increase and develop the student’s knowledge of Hispanic Cultural heritage, it will also be an opportunity for students to learn, rehearse and perform other cultural traditional dances.
9. Hip-Hop: Students will have the opportunity to engage in a modern dance class, where they will learn the importance of teamwork, positive character and responsibility.
Course and Program Information
10. Driver’s Ed: Students will take this course to help them acquire the classroom certification for obtaining a drivers license. 11. Self Defense: This course is geared around martial arts and self defense techniques that will hopefully assist students in learning key concepts of self defense, should they need it for any given emergency situation.
12. Culinary Arts/Café 345: Students work directly under a licensed Culinary Arts instructor to plan, prepare and cook a variety of recipes, as well as learn proper hygiene, necessary for any culinary arts profession. 13. Wii Sports/Student Lounge: Students will be able to participate in fun, safe and positive extracurricular activities after all work has been completed in order to continue building on self esteem, importance of positive attitude, and healthy relationships.
