INDUCTION CEREMONY AND BANQUET THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2008 LOS VERDES GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CALIFORNIA The El Camino College Athletic Hall of Fame Program is a publication of the Office of Public Relations and Marketing, Ann M. Garten, director Community Relations. EL CAMINO COLLEGE ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME A DIVISION OF THE EL CAMINO COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT FOUNDATION It is difficult to believe that El Camino College is completing its 61st year of athletic competition. El Camino College began its academic and athletic history in 1946 at three local high schools; Inglewood, Redondo Union and El Segundo, that permitted El Camino College to use their facilities from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. each night. The first two teams established in the winter of 1946 were water polo and basketball. The water polo team was coached by Ivan Carey at Inglewood High School; basketball was coached by Hob Hulls at Redondo Union High School. In 1947, when the college officially opened, all classes were held at Leuzinger High School with the same evening schedule. At Leuzinger, three new sports were established: football, track, and field, all led by El Camino Sincerely, College’s first coach, Amby Schindler; baseball was coached by Beryl Keene. Thus began the rise of the promi nence of the major athletic teams at El Camino College. In the intervening years many more sports were added Ray Southstone until El Camino College had a full complement of NCAA Chairman & Co-Founder teams. Women’s sports were incorporated into the ath ECC Athletic Hall of Fame letic program in 1975 via Title 9, which addressed the equality and availability of athletics to all students. During those developing years, many major coaches and athletes have passed through our stadium and gyms. We would be remiss if we failed to remember at least a few. John Morrow, first athletic director, dean, and assistant coach in football, basketball, and baseball; Amby Schindler, first football and track coach; Norm Verry, football and tennis; Urho Saari, water polo and swimming; Doug Essick, baseball, assistant coach in football; Dr. Ken Swearingen, football; Dave Hengsteler, wrestling and cross country; Harry Perry, swimming and water polo; Don Jurk, assistant in football; Rudy Kroon, water polo and swimming; and Paul Landreau, basketball. To name all the great athletes who have gone through our programs would be impossible, but let’s mention a few: Swimming: Bob Hughs, Bill Dornblaser, Jim Norris, Ralph Whitney, Walt Puffer. Basketball: Keith Erickson, UCLA, Lakers, Suns; George Stanich, bronze medal winner in the 1948 Olympics; Baseball: George Foster, Cincinnati Reds World Series MVP; Football: Fred Dryer, New York Giants, Los Angeles Rams, star of the television series “Hunter;” Bobby Beathard, general manager, Washington Redskins, San Diego Charg ers. Volleyball: Flo Hyman, first great women’s volleyball player, receiving international recognition; and Sharkie Zartman El Camino College’s first great ECC women’s volleyball coach. To end this dissertation, let’s not forget a few of the original athletes who helped place El Camino College on the map athletically, such as: Jerry Witt, football; Paul Held, football and first quarterback of the opening game in Murdoch Stadium; Jim Sears, first ECC All American at USC; Dave Taylor, water polo First Team All League; and Dr. Lee Groves, first football and basketball teams and then El Camino College’s school dentist. We hope our alumni and fans will continue to support El Camino College athletic programs and the Athletic Hall of Fame throughout the 21st century. El Camino College athletes, past and present, thank you all for your years of encouragement and support. Again this year we are recognizing ath letes, coaches, and supporters who have contributed to the success of the presti gious El Camino College athletic program. We would like to sincerely thank the founders of the Athletic Hall of Fame, in particular Dr. James Schwartz, former Dean of Health Sciences, and Mr. Ray Southstone, whose enthusiasm keeps the program alive with energy, year after year. Lauren exemplified the team’s dedication to excellence both on the court and in the classroom. Throughout the 2007-08 sea son, the Warriors overcame amazing odds to become state cham pions – Lauren’s leadership and consistency contributed to this success. Lauren was the leader of a well-balanced team and was named conference Most Valuable Player, while helping El Camino College win its seventh straight conference title. During her time at El Camino College, she maintained a 3.4 grade point average while succeeding in core classes, prepar ing for transfer and fulfilling her athletic goals. Lauren plans to transfer to a university in the fall to pursue a degree in business. A leader on the volleyball team, Lauren was a two-year starter for the Warriors. A graduate of North Torrance High School, she suffered an injury and didn’t immediately find herself at a fouryear institution. Once with the Warriors, she showed the growth and tenacity needed to be a champion. In her freshman year the Warriors won their conference, but lost in the state tournament. As a sophomore, her determination to be the very best showed through, as she helped lead the Warriors to victory – the first time a team won the state title from the losers’ bracket. Not your typical outside hitter, Lauren stands a slender 5 feet 8 inches tall and faced big blocks and taller opponents through out the year. She was unanimously named Conference MVP, First Team All-State, First Team All-State Tournament and First Team American Volleyball Coaches Association. Lauren was third in the conference with 3.71 kills per game. She led the team with nearly 400 kills for the season, and was second on the team in digs. These outstanding accomplishments over the past year are a direct result of Lauren’s character as a student-athlete. RAMON MARQUEZ – BASEBALL (2007-2008) As a member of the El Camino College baseball team and a two-year starter, Ramon Marquez helped lead the Warriors to the 2007 conference title – the first for the team in 20 years. In that first year, he played first base and batted in the fourth position, earn ing a .568 batting average and an on-base percentage of .495. In 41 games, he earned 45 RBIs, four homeruns and 16 BB, in addi tion to winning 1st Team All Conference honors. For the 2008 season, Ramon’s leadership and excellence on the field have placed the Warriors in the running for another conference title and playoff race. With his top defense (only one error in the field), his batting average is .992 and he has an on-base percentage of .523. Ramon has been a leader for the Warriors through the past two seasons and continues to impress with his on the-field consistency. His dedication to excellence in the classroom continues this year, and as a first-generation college student, he is looking forward to transferring to a university in the fall. CLARK D. COBLE – TENNIS (2007-2008) Clark Coble is definitely a strong example of the commu nity college student-athlete who has excelled. A force to be reck oned with in the South Coast Conference, Clark has clearly rede fined himself in his college years. A high school career of friends, sports and teen drama was replaced by a spirit to compete, an ambition to achieve and a solid academic life guided by dynamic professors. A two-year leader on the men’s tennis team, Clark is described by head coach Steve Van Kanegan as “our unofficial leader, a player with grit, and our best and most consistent per former.” Currently completing his second season as the No. 1 doubles player and No. 2 singles player, he continues to help the Warriors work toward the state tournament. Off the court, Clark performed in the college’s fall production of Macbeth. Juggling athletics, community service, family and work, he still managed to earn a GPA of 3.8. Clark was accepted to the University of Califor nia at San Diego and Irvine, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, California State University, Long Beach, and is waiting to hear from UCLA. He is a true Scholar-Baller and outstanding individual in our program. Photo by Bill Hood The Student-Athlete of the Year scholarship is sponsored by James F. Schwartz and the California K-9 Association. 10 11
