GUARDING THE GARDEN, MAY 2008
MAKING IT EASIER FOR YOU TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
As we head into those lazy and far too hazy LA summer days, this installment of Guarding the
Garden brings you some exciting Green Team activity updates and a terrific resource for
gardening that is truly green.
Yasher koach to Jonathan and Sharon Swerdlow for donating our first “Technotrash”
recycling box from Green Disc. Now you can bring all your outdated e-waste, from PC’s to
CD’s, from cell phones to rechargeable batteries, to TBA for safe and secure recycling and
disposal. Additional details online at www.tbala.org/greenteam. Thank you, Stuart
Weiss, for volunteering to purchase our next box!
And don’t forget to drop off your used inkjet and toner cartridges as well. Beth Am
and Pressman exchange them for cash in our partnership with RECYCLE4KIDS.ORG.
Pressman Academy Aims for Waste-Free Lunch
Coming this fall—Pressman families will be encouraged to pack lunches that generate zero
trash. Imagine the hundreds, perhaps thousands of pounds of resources that we’ll conserve
in just one year. Countless schools across the country do it, and so can we! Additional
details are coming in our August column, as well as in Pressman Academy materials. Yasher
koach to Nina Reinis, Sharon Brooks, and Rabbi Chaim Turreff for creating this
Green Shabbat Coming In September
As part of TBA’s efforts to help its members “discover the power of t’shuvah and change the
world” during the High Holy Days, we will celebrate a shul-wide Green Shabbat on
September 20th. A major speaker will address all three minyanim to help us understand that
we must not only do t’shuvah to restore ourselves—but to restore our planet as well. Watch
for additional details.

Light Bulb Reserve Created
To assist the temple in its efforts to convert to and maintain environmentally-friendly lighting,
Gil Hetsroni donated a portion of his Bar Mitzvah gifts to establish a line in the Facility
Reserve budget for “Green” Lighting. Please contact the office to contribute. Even a small
donation worth the price of one bulb makes a big difference in our energy savings. Mazel tov
and yasher koach, Gil!
Green Congregants of the Month
Congratulations to Lida Baker and Paul Nisenbaum, who converted their whole Point View
front yard to a water-wise garden filled with beautiful native California plants. Way to go!
And as this is prime gardening season, check out Clean Air Gardening at
www.cleanairgardening.com. They offer a wide range of environmentally friendly lawn
and gardening supplies!
Living A Green Life—The Reality Series, Scott Shulman’s reflections on what it means to go
green, will return to these pages soon. Send your comments, your ideas, and your
nominations for “Green Congregant of the Month” to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Have a wonderful summer!
