Contributing factors include: progressive physical decline; medical illness; neurological deficits and psychosocial stressors. The combination of medical and psychiatric conditions can make the evaluation, care and treatment of older individuals challenging. However, most emotional illness in older adults is treatable in the proper environment by professionals who understand the physical and psychological factors that affect elders. The Geriatric Psychiatry Program of Saint Anne’s Hospital was created to address the special needs of elders, age 65 and older.
