On 9/26/2007, I performed a google search for “cornflower.”

I looked through the second hit that had a lot of useful information and many photographs. The URL of the

After looking through the site, I found information about the plant’s physical characteristics and some history. I
also found a picture on the site which I incorporated into my website.

I e-mailed the author of the site for permission to use the picture on my web page.


Then I went back to the google site to look at some other websites.

I went to the “HerbData” site:

I got some useful information there and also decided to use the picture they had because it was so clear and
beautiful. I wrote to the site for permission.

I went to the 6th hit and clicked on the website. The URL is:

There I obtained some more information on the plant. I also went to the link for the copyrighted image of the
states. It took me to a site called WildSeed Farms. The URL is :

Form the “Wild Seeds” section I went to individual species. There on the left hand side I found Cornflower and I
clicked it. I decided to use the picture for my project and asked them for permissions. The URL is :

Then I went back to the google hits and clicked on the 8th hit. The URL is:

Then I took the link of Michigan State University site at the bottom of the page. The site was discontinues but
gave an option to go to other resources. Went to “Ornamental Plant Plus”

Centaurea disease problems:

On 9/30/2007 I went to google and searched Centaurea cyanus L.

The third listing on the hits seemed to be the most useful; however, I could only look at the abstract using google.
I decided to go to the George Mason Library web-site and look up the article in the database.
I went to www.GMU.edu and took the link to “Libraries”
The I went to EJournal Finder and looked up The Journal of Ethnopharmacology using its ISSN that I found from
the google search which is 0378-8741.

Then I took the link to “Science Direct” Website and looked up the article by its volume and page number, which
are 68 and 235 respectively.
Then I went to the full text of the article and obtained a lot of useful information.



9/30/2007 I did a google search for uronic acid.

10/2//2007 I did a Scirus search for cornflower, clicking to only receive information for Journal Sources.

On the right hand side of the screen, I saw the keyword apigenin, which seemed to be a compound in cornflower.
I decided to research it further.


Then I searched the word apigenin and clicked to only receive back “other web sources.”

The 13th hit was a correspondence that confirmed the relationship between apigenin and anti-inflammatory
effects.

 The second article down, was an extremely helpful article to incorporate into the project. The title of the article

I went to the GMU Library page and went to databases. There I looked up “P’ and found Plant Science. I
searched it in hopes of gaining some more insight.

The 7th hit seemed to be very interesting; however, when I went to find the journal in the GMU library eJournal
finder, I couldn’t find it and therefore could not get the article.

Then the 2nd link grabbed my attention. When I went to find it, it was a one page paper with only the abstract in
it.

The first link was the same article as the one found in Elsevier.
I decided to redirect my search

I did not find anything useful from this Database either.
I wanted to do some more in depth search using the SciFinder Scholar software.
I went onto SciFinder Scholar and chose Explore. Then I explored the “Topic” synthesis of apigenin.

I chose to look at the 11 references that found “synthesis of apigenin” as entered.

Then I went to Locate and searched apigenin to get a more generalized search.

Clicked on the reactions icon. Then refined the search to get the articles that were from the Journal of Organic
Chemistry and Tetrahedron Letters.
 The article in the Journal of Organic Chemistry was more relatable to the topic. The title is “Solvent-Free
Synthesis of Functionalized Flavones under Microwave Irradiation”
