SDG Meeting 5th August 2010 at CEL Present: Roger Foster, Matthew Taylor, Keith Wood, Darren Mundy and Matt from Save9. Apologies: Bob Harris, Richard Askew, Andrew Clay, Nick Taylor, Mike Drawneek, Helen Harrop, Adrian Riley, John Popham. Probably a record for apologies, which may be an observation on August meetings, but was a pity because the presentation by CEL Interns was something which deserved a larger audience. I’m including an account of these presentations, prepared by Matthew, which will give you some idea. I raised the question of Social Media programmes or training programmes which might be useful in Scarborough. I had already had a suggestion from John Popham: “Can I suggest Grou.ps as a Social Networking site – See http://grou.ps/bigsocietynorth for an example” At the meeting Matthew referred to a Social Media Training Programme being launched by the University, with some courses at CEL. Details can be had from the website referred to in Matthew’s report. Most Group members will know of the changes at Yorkshire Forward, and as a consequence the Renaissance Office in Scarborough (on Falconers Road) will be closing at the end of September, and Nick Taylor will no longer be Renaissance Manager. I am hoping that the Scarborough Digital Action Group will continue to meet, provided that is what the members want, and I hope future meetings will be at CEL at Woodend, thanks to Matthew and the University. Provisionally the next meeting will be October 21st, 2.30 pm at CEL. Please note the date now. I’m always glad to hear from you, especially with ideas for future projects or events, so please keep in touch. Roger Foster Intern presentations Luke Hansell - Chart Scarborough. Luke outlined CEL’s involvement in the Chart Scarborough project The online version of the map will allow users to engage in a media rich environment to accompany their journey around trails published on the Chart Scarborough website. The online trails aim to provide valuable information about Scarborough’s high quality and diverse cultural offerings. CEL is developing the interface to add points on the map with links to appropriate media. Users will be able to create their own trails online which can then be accessed by other users. Gemma Sweeny - Innovation Vouchers. Gemma outlined CEL’s work on two business link innovation voucher projects. This included online training programme content creation & a new content management system for local creative companies. Both companies have been pleased with the work. The Innovation Voucher scheme has provided a cost effective way for local companies to access University expertise. Tim Smith - The Scarborough System. Tim outlined the CEL/University of Hull’s new digital signage concept. The interactive web based digital signage system has been submitted for Proof of Concept development funding and has attracted interest from potential commercial partners. Hoaran Wang – Deep trawling software. Hoaran discussed CEL’s current work in this new field. The hope is to implement the results into an events searching system for the Creative Coast network. It is envisage that there would be a 1 stop portal that would allow users to sign up for news/info or check events listings without having to visit all Creative Coast partner/member websites individually. Femi Fagbohun – CEL IT. Femi Outlined the IT setup that has now been established at CEL including our new external server which will allow for application testing and provide hosting space to CEL supported businesses A new CEL website is due to be launched soon that will allow new creative talent to showcase work and provide a creative brokerage service amongst other offerings. Once the new website is published you’ll be able to find out more about the above projects – www.hull.ac.uk/cel CEL in partnership with iHull is hosting Social Media Training events in October.
