Job Description
The Canadian Diabetes Association is searching for six Dietetic interns or students for Camp Kakhamela. The
focus of Camp Kakhamela has been to provide children living with type 1 diabetes with opportunities to enjoy an
authentic camp experience while having all of their diabetes needs monitored by a dedicated team of trained
medical professionals. While at camp, children learn about diabetes management in an enriching, safe and fun
environment. The educational aspect focuses on blood glucose testing, administering insulin, and meal planning
and proper exercise. Our campers are also able to meet other children who share a personal understanding of the
challenges that come from living with diabetes, and many of these relationships develop into lifelong friendships.
The camp sessions are:
Session 1) June 30-July 7.
Session 2) July 7 – July 13
Three volunteers for each session.
Role and Responsibilities:
- assist in all nutrition related needs and issues at camp under the direction of the Camp dietitians
- assist in review of camp menu
- participate in and help out with orientation for camp counselors and staff
- carb counting for breakfast, lunch and dinner meals
- assist in providing adequate supply of hypoglycemic dietary treatments
- assist in Food Fun Facts & Activities for campers
- assist in providing adequate food supply and carb counting for campers’ out-trips
- participate in daily multidisciplinary team meetings and updates regarding day-to-day diabetes
management of campers

Qualifications and Background Requirements:
- able to work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team

- At least completed 3 year of UBC Dietetics Program
Preferred Skills:
Basic knowledge of Type 1 Diabetes
Food Safe preferred but not required
