A Sample Informative Speech on Dogs
The first dog I ever had was a Labrador-Retriever. She was fat, round, and had these tiny
little legs. If she rolled onto her back she couldn’t get up without help. We named her Spanky
after the fat kid from The Little Rascals TV show (attention statement). For thousands of
years domesticated dogs have been a popular and beneficial pet to have, and if well taken
care of will provide you with years of happiness (thesis). Today I am going to talk about the
history of dogs, their uses and benefits, and finally how to maintain a healthy and happy
1. Dogs have a long and colorful history with human civilization.
a. According to canine historian Dan Daniels in his 2005 book A History of Man’s
Best Friend dogs were first domesticated by early cavemen.
b. European society began to cross-breed species for specific purposes
i. Dogs were bred for hunting.
ii. Dogs were bred for fighting.
iii. Dogs were bred for ornamentation.
c. The American Kennel Association’s website, last updated January 12, 2009,
reports that there are currently over 350 different breeds of domesticated dog around the
II. In a personal interview on January 21, 2009, with John Studowski, a specialist in canine
protection training, he explains that dogs provide many benefits and have several uses.
a. They are trained for explosive and drug detection.
b. The Paws Across America website, last accessed February 20, 2009, explains that
dogs have become a major part of service and rehabilitation programs.
i. They assist those with physical disabilities.
ii. They can assist those with mental disabilities as well.
c. They are used for therapy.
i. They are used in convalescent homes.
ii. They are used in prison environments.
III. The March, 2009 issue of Popular Pooch states that in order to have a healthy and happy
dog you need to take care of it properly.
A. It is important to keep your dog on a balanced diet.
B. Proper grooming and hygiene go a long way.
C. The more attention you give the happier both human and dog will be.
Today we have learned about dogs, their history, benefits, and proper maintenance (review).
The dog is an animal which has supported us for thousands of years, and will continue to do
so for thousands more to come (reiterate thesis). Out of any pet that I had, Spanky was by
far my favorite. Perhaps now, if you haven’t already, you’ll be interested in buying or
adopting a dog as wonderful as Spanky was for me (concluding statement).
