Dear Parents and Carers,

Cookery Club
The cooking club has now come to an end. The children have had a fantastic time
making a range of treats from pasta to pizza to cakes. They have learned how to
chop vegetables, ice cakes, make smoothies and practise their maths with weighing
and measuring. We would like to say a huge thank you to Denise Gillespie who has
voluntarily helped out every week. We could not have managed it without her.
Thanks also to Mrs Stewart for kindly donating and washing the aprons every week.

Rag Bag
The next Rag Bag collection will take place on Thursday 24th May. Rag Bag is
sending out collection bags prior to this, and we will pass on to you when received.
Rag Bag will pay for all types of unwanted clothing and books (please store books in
sealed boxes) - shoes, soft toys, bags, hats, belts, towels, curtains, bed linen and
hardback/paperback books and textbooks. Our last collection earned the school a
whopping £144, so please keep supporting this worthy fundraiser. We bought some
great new books for the school library from the money we received.

Pupil Council News
The Pupil Council have been researching World Water Day as part of their whole
school responsibilities and produced a drama to raise awareness amongst fellow
pupils of our need to conserve water. We looked at ways water is wasted around the
school and at home and the children advised their peers on making more sustainable
choices.

P1-3 Trip
P1-3 enjoyed a fabulous excursion on Wednesday to the Smith and had a wonderful
tour from Vincent who really brought the exhibits to life. Among the rare treasures
was the children’s own artwork which they were delighted to see still on display. If
you get the chance over the holidays the Smith is a resource well worth visiting and
the garden at the back is just delightful. Another highlight later in the day was our
visit to Mediterranea restaurant, where Patrick and Marie Elena invited the children
into their kitchen to help them to prepare a Greek feast. This couple went above and
beyond to ensure the children had a safe and memorable trip and as they did not
charge us for the visit or any of the many dishes that the children prepared I would
urge you as a thank you to consider visiting this restaurant as a family treat in the
near future. The restaurant is in Viewfield Place and details can be found on the
attached business card. Please note although the card is out of date Patrick has
assured us that the offer will be honoured when booking and when presented to staff.

Swimming
Swimming for P4-5 starts the first day back after the Easter holidays, on Monday
16th April 2012. Please remember to bring your swimming costume and a towel.
Can children also bring a packed lunch on swimming days as we will return to school
too late for school lunches

Easter Assembly
Yesterday the children were full of the ‘joys of spring’ and were in fine voice helping
us all to get into the Easter holiday feel. They entertained us all with their wonderful
singing and talented recorder and instrument playing. I think you will all agree that
the expressive arts are alive and well at Port of Menteith and that our children are all
benefiting from the many talents of our staff and visiting specialists. Well done to Mr
Scott for his humorous insights on cabbage - as a health promoting school we will do
our best to champion the cabbage in eco time! Well done to the children who
decorated eggs for our Olymp-Eggs display. There was a vast array of talent and
ingenuity displayed in the designing of an Olympic themed egg, Using recycled
materials we had ski-ing eggs, high jumping eggs, running eggs, diving eggs and
many, many more. Eggs-actly what we were looking for!

Easter Egg Hunt
Wednesday evening saw the long anticipated annual Easter egg hunt at Port of
Menteith take place. This year the hunt took place in the school grounds. Thank you
to Mrs Messer for organising the event and to all those who supported us by donating
eggs and time to help set up the hunt. Well done to all the older children who took
part this year, we were very impressed with your support for the little ones and the
way you worked together as teams to make sure everyone had the pleasure of
finding or getting some eggs. Hopefully you didn’t munch them all up at once and
shared a few choccies with the adults too.

We wish you and your family a happy holiday and look forward to working with you in
the summer term.

Finally, we would like to invite any comments or suggestions parents and carers may
have on how we can improve any aspects of the school. Comments can be made by
telephone, in writing or by email to the school address noted above.

Yours sincerely,

David Scott
Headteacher
