Seminar VI, Part 2/page  1  IDSVA Course 902.2 Seminar VI, Part 2: Launching the Dissertation: Topic, Outline, Bibliography September 14 -December 21, 2009, Online Professor Kim-Cohen 3 Credits Syllabus Seminar VI, Part 2 Launching the Dissertation: Topic, Outline, Bibliography Course Description: In Seminar VI, Part 2 we will begin to shape your field statements and reading lists into a roadmap for your dissertation. The aim will be to stabilize your list of 25 titles that will be included on your oral qualifying exam, while also establishing a broader bibliography of books to be explored in the process of your research. We will work to hone your dissertation topic and to create an outline that will guide your ongoing research. Course Requirements: Professor Kim-Cohen will conduct individual telephone calls every other week, starting the second week of the course. On alternate weeks, starting the first week of the course, we will have a group conference call involving all students in the seminar. Each conference call will include two student presentations on individual research. These presentations will be 10 minutes in length and will be informal, seminar-style presentations (as opposed to formal, conference-style presentations). Over the course of the semester, each student will give two presentations. The written versions of the presentations do not need to have formal citations, but please insure that I can verify sources when necessary. Written versions of the presentations should be submitted to Professor Kim-Cohen via FirstClass and to Submission Storage. Students are expected to collaborate and converse on Open Class Forum, sharing ideas and questions. By the end of the course each student will have produced a thesis statement, a detailed outline, and a bibliography intended to act as a roadmap for ongoing dissertation research. Written versions of the presentations and thesis statement, detailed outline, and bibliography should be submitted to Professor Kim-Cohen via FirstClass and to IDSVA Submission Storage. Late submissions will be accepted but not given credit unless prior arrangements have been made with Professor Kim-Cohen. Extensions are granted on a case-by-case basis in response to special circumstances. Seminar VI, Part 2/page  2  Assessment: Grades will be determined by assessment of contributions to discussions on Open Class Forum and Seminar Conference Calls (20%); Individual Calls with Professor Kim-Cohen (20%); Oral and Written Versions of Presentations (30%); Thesis Statement, Detailed Outline, and Bibliography (30%).
