Outstanding Service Award Announcement Winner, Summer 2009 Andy

Outstanding Service Award Announcement: Winner, Summer 2009: Andy Ford 27th International Conference of the System Dynamics Society Albuquerque, New Mexico From its inception, the System Dynamics Society has been an organization of volunteers. While we now have a paid professional staff that does an enormous amount, the Society could not run without volunteers and everyone’s contribution is important. But some sustain that effort at a very high rate for an extended period. That exceptional service, above and beyond the call of duty, deserves recognition. In order to do this, the Society established the Outstanding Service Award. Prior awardees have been Jack Pugh and Bob Eberlein. This year, we would like to recognize Andy Ford for his outstanding service. In 1986, the second year of publication for the System Dynamics Review, Andy took on the role of Managing Editor. He held that position singly, and paired with another Managing Editor, under four different Executive Editors, until stepping down in 2007. That is 21 years of service in a job that is both demanding, and of critical importance to the Society and the field of System Dynamics. And of course Andy’s work does not stop there. This year he is one of the Program CoChairs for the conference. That is a remarkable devotion to duty! Please join me in congratulating and thanking Andy. System Dynamics Society Outstanding Service Award The System Dynamics Society Outstanding Service Award recognizes individuals that have, on a volunteer basis, made exceptional contributions to the Society over an extended period of time. The Society has a long and proud tradition of volunteer service and Julie Pugh, who volunteered as the first Executive Director, has inspired this award. Even after establishing a central office with a paid professional staff in 1996, the growth and development of the Society has been heavily dependent on the work of volunteers. To acknowledge this work, emphasize its importance in achieving Society goals, and highlight efforts that can inspire others, this service award was established in 2009. It is awarded as often as once per year during the annual conference. 2009 Committee members: James Lyneis (Chair), Jack Pugh and Bob Eberlein, and Roberta Spencer.
