Post title: Sustainability Officer


Grade: Grade 7 (proposed)


Duration of post: Permanent


Responsible to: University Safety Adviser, Safety and Environmental Services



Purpose of the job:

     To be the catalyst for activity and commitment in the development and implementation of the
      University’s Sustainability Policy

     Provide strategic direction to improve the University’s sustainability and corporate social
      responsibility performance

     Promote and coordinate the integration of sustainability issues into other University policies,
      rules, products, services and operations.

     Conduct training and promote sustainability awareness through staff induction, staff
      development programs, Fresher’s Fair, sustainability awareness events and promotional
      campaigns to bring about change in attitudes and behaviour.

     Co-ordinate University activities for sustainability

     Monitor the University’s sustainability performance and benchmark this with other further and
      higher education establishments.


Responsibilities and duties:


The responsibilities of the post include:

-     Oversee the development of specific policies, procedures and guidelines for Sustainability, in
      particular those related to energy, procurement, travel planning, biodiversity, waste and
      sustainable construction.

-     Represent the University through involvement with local organisations and professional
      bodies such as Stirling Council, Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges.

-     Contribute to relevant University committees, in particular the Safety, Health and
      Environment Committee, to embed Sustainability objectives and management into University
      practices.

-   Set objectives and targets for each of the areas of sustainability performance, monitor
    progress and benchmark University performance with other further and higher education
    establishments.

-   Keep up to date with relevant legislation and provide advice to University senior personnel on
    compliance with Environmental and Sustainability regulatory and policy requirements.

-   Work on the implementation of the University's Travel Planning Strategy.

-   Co-ordinate and deliver sustainability awareness and energy efficiency campaigns.

-   Provide advice to the Procurement department to ensure improved Sustainable purchasing.

-   Provide technical support and advice to Estates and Campus Services on new build projects
    and sustainable construction.

-   Consult with suppliers and contractors to keep abreast of improvements in sustainability
    performance of products and services.

-   Work with and advise departments to help integrate Sustainability into University
    management and services.

-   Implement Environmental emergency preparedness procedures for the University that
    supplement existing emergency preparedness arrangements.

-   Carry out auditing and reporting on Sustainability and conduct an annual sustainability
    performance report for the University.

-   Identify the University's training needs for Sustainability and work with senior Managers in the
    development and delivery of Sustainability training programmes, awareness events and
    promotional campaigns.


Skills, qualifications and attributes:

The applicant must have:

A professional qualification in Environmental Science, Sustainable Development or other related
subject.

High level of oral, written and ‘people’ communication skills.

A systematic and self-motivated approach to work, be able to work on their own initiative and
liaise effectively with professional staff throughout the University.

High level of numerical skills including computer literacy.

It is desirable that the candidate has:

Professional experience of sustainability issues gained over a number of years while at a
management level in the private or public sector.

A good understanding of building structures and services.

A current clean driving license.
