Per Øhrgaard was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1944, graduated from High School
1962 and studied German Language and Literature at the Universities of Copenhagen,
(West-)Berlin, and Kiel. In 1969 he received his ph.d., and in 1978 he defended his
second thesis (= German 'Habilitation'), an analysis of Goethe's 'Wilhelm Meister'-
Since 1980 Per Øhrgaard has been professor of German literature at the
University of Copenhagen (at present on three years' leave being professor af the
Copenhagen Business School), and he has held visiting professorships at the University
of Washington, Seattle (1985) and the Christian-Albrecht-University of Kiel, Germany
(1979/80 and 2001). He has published books and articles in Danish and German on
German literature (especially the 'Goethezeit' and contemporary literature) and German
culture and society and translated more than 30 books from German into Danish, e.g.
since the 1970es the works by Günter Grass. Per Øhrgaard has received Danish and
German awards, among them the Friedrich-Gundolf-prize of the German Academy of
Language and Letters (Darmstadt) of which he 2004 also became a member.
From 1983 to 1990, Per Øhrgaard was president of the Danish P.E.N. In 1993
he joined the board of directors of the Carlsberg Foundation and the supervisory board
of the Carlsberg Breweries, and since 2003 he has been a member of the supervisory
board of the major Danish newspaper company JP/Politikens Hus.
