Sections 11 – 20 relate to the main delivery as indicated in bold above.

11. Educational Aims of the Programme Specified in terms of the general intentions of the programme and its distinctive characteristics; these should be consistent
      with any relevant benchmark and with the Mission of the University.

      The Undergraduate Framework represents an innovative, challenging and distinctive approach to undergraduate business education. The
      overall intention of the UG Portfolio is to create graduates with the potential to successfully develop careers in management with national
      and multi-national companies. We seek, therefore, to produce graduates who display distinctiveness in the employment market through a
      sophisticated understanding of the ways in which businesses operate and the possession of a range of attributes attractive to employers.

      The Undergraduate Framework has been designed around two imperatives: an approach to business education based on business
      process rather than function; and curriculum based interventions focussed on personal development.

      Business education has traditionally been delivered through modules based on business function. Such a traditional pattern has drawn
      largely on the supply side aspect of business school faculty organisation. Many critical commentators have argued that such an approach
      fails to reflect the manner in which functional business activities are integrated within business organisational structures. An alternative to
      this functional approach is one based on business process. Such an approach seeks to identify the major cycles operating within a
      business and reflect those cycles in the content and structure of programmes. It has been argued that such an approach seeks to
      examine how work is done rather than what is done and fosters a deeper understanding of business practice.

      The core modules within the Undergraduate Framework represent a move from functional education to business process education. This
      approach, which seeks to align the core module content more closely to business organisation and operation, seeks to enable students to
      develop a distinctive understanding of business and the inter-connectedness of the functional activities. This distinctiveness seeks to
      enhance the employment opportunities of students. Underpinning the design of the core modules within the Framework are five business
      cycles. These cycles have been drawn from academic literature and in particular the work of Walker and Black (2000)1. The five business
      cycles are as follows:

           a) the acquisition of capital resources;
           b) the acquisition of human resources;

                                                                                                                               Northumbria University
                                                                                                                             Programme Specification
           c) the conversion/service process;
           d) the sales/customer service process; and
           e) organisational performance measurement and management.

      The design of the core has sought to:
         a) map content against the discrete elements of the cycles noted above; and
         b) ensure development of knowledge and the application of and analysis of these cycles across Levels 4, 5 and 6.

      The mapping of the core modules to these cycles is set out in Appendix III.
      The programmes within the UG Framework have also been designed to meet the requirements of the applicable QAA benchmark
      statements. The mapping of the core can be found in Appendix IV.

12. How Students are Supported in their Learning/Employability/Career Development eg curriculum design, personal development plans, placements,
      fieldwork, practical projects.

      In addition to developing a detailed understanding and knowledge of how business works we also seek to enhance the attractiveness of
      students to potential employers through a specific approach to the personal development of every student. The Undergraduate
      Framework places emphasis on the development of the students’ intellectual capability of independent learning and of transferable skills
      but seeks to go beyond this. It is recognised that the employment market in the UK for business students is changing. In particular, those
      students wishing to pursue careers with multinational organisations will find themselves competing against students from within the EU
      and beyond. The particular interventions built into the Undergraduate Framework seek to develop a range of attitudes and attributes that
      will put students in a position to compete for positions within this competitive framework.

      Based upon consultation and evidence drawn from academic research2 a range of specific skills and attributes have been identified. In
      the core modules we address such skills as decision making, team building, critical enquiry, confidence, self-knowledge and self-
      reflection. The development of this personal development agenda as a critical imperative underpins the Undergraduate Framework.
      Module content thus reflects the responsibility Newcastle Business School has to prepare students for productive careers and citizenship
      and, through a greater emphasis on career management, recognises the vocational utility of higher education. The overarching aim of
      the personal development agenda is to create a body of graduates who can display distinctiveness in the employment market. The
      mapping of the personal development agenda is set out in Appendix V.

                                                                                                                      Northumbria University
                                                                                                                    Programme Specification
      Appendix V highlights the manner in which personal development has been integrated into the core modules within the Undergraduate
      Framework. This integration permits the development of specific attributes and attitudes alongside the development of business
      knowledge. It also seeks to emphasise that the development of these skills is an essential part of the learning process. Assessment in
      specific modules will test both knowledge and the attainment of specific skills. These assessments, together with the feedback provided,
      will provide students with an opportunity to create a portfolio that will provide the basis for self-reflection.

      In addition to these module-based opportunities the following additional Newcastle Business School -supported activities aimed at
      personal development are available to students:
          a) All students have an opportunity to spend their third year out of the University on an industrial placement or can participate on an
              academic exchange programme with a partner institution;
          b) Language scholarships are provided on a competitive basis to enable students to either continue their language studies outside of
              their formal programme structures or take up a new language;
          c) Travel bursaries of up to £1,000 each are available on a competitive basis to students who can demonstrate a travel project that
              promotes personal development; and
          d) Places are made available to students to participate in Summer Schools with partner institutions.

      In addition to these Newcastle Business School interventions, students have access to a range of University based interventions that
      seek to support learning. The ASk provision is directed at overseas and non-UK resident students and seeks to enhance the language
      capability of students and supports Newcastle Business School teaching and learning. Student Services and Learning Resources provide
      a range of on-line and other learning and support resources. Particular attention has been paid to the role formative assessment can play
      in highlighting the need for students to access these resources.

      The University provides a framework for student support based on induction, academic facilitation and well-being referral. All students
      participate in a series of University, Newcastle Business School and programme based induction events before the beginning of formal
      teaching. It is recognised that induction is a continuing process and the personal development agenda incorporates aspects of induction
      that are addressed during the academic year.

      Academic facilitation is addressed in a number of ways. Programme specific Student Handbooks and University maintained on-line
      resources are made available to all students and provide access to a range of policies and regulations relevant to the student body. In
      addition, each programme is supported by a management structure that includes a Programme Director, a Programme Leader and, in
      certain cases Pathway leaders. This management team, together with the dedicated programme administrators provide academic advice
      and guidance. The programme management teams are also responsible for running Programme Committee meetings with students and
      carrying out the annual programme and programme area reviews. These reviews form the basis of adjustments to programme content
      and student related issues.

      Newcastle Business School has a dedicated staff member responsible for addressing non-academic student issues. This programme,
      promoted throughout Newcastle Business School as the ‘Speak to Liz’ programme, provides a direct link between Newcastle Business
      School and the University’s Student Services. It is also integrated with the Newcastle Business School Undergraduate attendance
      monitoring process. Under this process attendance on the core modules is monitored and non-attendees are required to explain their
      absence. The experience of Newcastle Business School has been that non-attendance is often the first indication of a need for
      intervention, and thus the ‘Speak to Liz’ service is both re-active and pro-active.

13. Learning Outcomes of Programme Specified in terms of performance capabilities to be shown on completion of the programme/pathway. Please identify
      numerically to correspond to the map of learning outcomes in section 18.
      Learning Goals

      To make the two imperatives noted in Section 11 above clear, the undergraduate framework has been designed around four learning
      goals. These four goals are as follows:

      Graduates will be:-

      1. Knowledgeable about the theory and practice of international business and management

      2. Skilful in the use of personal, professional and managerial techniques and processes

      3. Employable as graduates

      4. Aware of ethical issues impacting on business and professional practice

      It is necessary to demonstrate the achievement of these goals. For each goal, therefore, a set of learning objectives have been stated.
      The objectives provide a framework within which individual module learning outcomes have been written; the mapping of the core and
      programme modules to these objectives can be found below in Section 18. In addition, the assessment strategy has been designed, in
      part to demonstrate the achievement of the objectives/learning goals. Assessment provides a means of demonstrating the achievement
      of the module learning objectives. The collective success within individual modules will demonstrate the achievement of the objectives
      and thus the achievement of the four goals.

         3. Demonstrate an understanding of different perspectives towards business ethics including shareholder, stakeholder and critical
            approaches.

14. Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy Specified to enable learners to achieve and demonstrate the above learning outcomes.

      The discrete module is the basic building block used in the construction of programmes and a common, consistent approach to module
      delivery is desirable. The development of the University’s e-learning platform and the increasing sophistication of the electronic resources
      available has provided an opportunity to create a more blended approach to teaching and learning. Although class contact through
      lectures, workshops and seminars continues it is recognised that significant learning takes place outside of the formally scheduled
      sessions through both directed and independent learning. It is recognised, too, that to develop the student as a critical, enquiring
      independent learner there should be increasing emphasis placed on independent learning at Levels 5 and 6 of the degree programmes.

      The model for the delivery of each discrete module is as follows:

           a) the Teaching and Learning Plan represents the route map through the module. This will set out not only the content and objectives
              of each lecture, seminar or other formal contact session but will identify the nature and objectives of the directed learning and
              provide guidance for the independent learning. Embedded within the Teaching and Learning Plan will be the e-learning resources
              (texts, journals, web sites, sight/sound broadcasts) provided through the University systems or developed by staff. The Teaching
              and Learning Plan will be available at the start of each module and will enable the student to understand the module learning
              outcomes, the assessment format, the objectives of each formal scheduled activity and the additional work the student will be
              required to undertake to achieve the learning outcomes. In addition to developing knowledge and understanding, individual
              modules will also seek to develop specific personal, transferable or intellectual skills and attributes. These will be identified in the
              particular Teaching and Learning Plan;
           b) lectures, seminars and workshops provide a means of introducing and clarifying issues and provide forums for discussion, debate
              and exploration. Students should expect lectures to provide a means of transmitting knowledge but also provide a forum in which

                                                                                                                          Northumbria University
                                                                                                                        Programme Specification
              structure can be provided in complex areas of study. They also provide a means by which practitioners may share experience and
              knowledge with the student body. Lectures may often form the introduction to the topic that will be subject to deeper examination
              in the seminars and workshops. Seminars/workshops are ‘events’ built around case studies, debateable problems or the
              application of theory to practical examples, which may be both qualitative and quantitative in character. The directed learning
              within the Teaching and Learning Plan is primarily concerned with the work students must do to prepare for seminars/workshops;
           c) Directed/Independent Learning: Directed learning refers to tutor determined reading/reflection and other activities identified in the
              Teaching and Learning Plan designed to support the achievement of the module learning outcomes. Directed learning involves
              the identification of a range of activities involving published or e-based material. Some of this directed learning will relate directly
              to the seminar/workshop tasks identified in the Teaching and Learning Plan. Other directed learning will direct students to
              resources which further their knowledge and understanding. Independent learning, by its nature, is not tutor-determined but will be
              guided. Between levels 4, 5 and 6 the balance of directed/independent learning will change with greater emphasis being placed
              on independent learning as students progress towards their final year. This reflects the expectation that students will increasingly
              rely on their own information literacy and intellectual skills as they progress through the programme;
           d) Students are expected to engage in a minimum of 600 hours of academic activity each semester. This includes not only
              attendance at lectures, seminars and workshops but also engagement through directed and independent learning activities and
              assessment. Attendance at all formally scheduled sessions is expected and will be monitored, and seminars/workshops are run
              on the basis that any directed tasks identified in the Teaching and Learning Plan have been completed.

      Assessment Strategy

      Assessment is regarded as an essential element in the learning process and represents more than a grade awarded on the basis of
      student performance. In particular, assessment provides a means of:

           a) enabling students to reflect on their performance in a module, through the use of appropriate formative processes, and in doing so
              further the development of knowledge and understanding;
           b) in its summative form, reflecting the overall achievement of the student in each discrete module and in the case of Level 5 and 6,
              will feed into the overall degree classification awarded by the University;
           c) developing key transferable and intellectual skills, through the variety of methods employed; and
           d) demonstrating that the student has achieved the four learning goals set out above.

      It is recognised that assessment is an integral part of the learning process and that both formative and summative assessment contribute
      to the achievement of the module learning outcomes.

      The Teaching and Learning Plans for each module set out the assessment strategy adopted for each module. Typically, formative tasks
      will provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning to date and obtain feedback in order to reflect on their knowledge

                                                                                                                         Northumbria University
                                                                                                                       Programme Specification
      and understanding and the acquisition of intellectual or transferable skills. Within the overall structure of the framework, formative tasks
      take the form of periodic assessments, sometimes utilising the assessment facilities of the e-learning platform or feedback sessions
      incorporated into the seminars and workshops. In some cases this feedback will be peer feedback.

      In certain modules module tutors have enabled formative assessment to form part of the summative assessment. This in part represents
      an incentive for students to engage in the seminar process and in part reflects the contribution continuous learning may contribute
      towards the final graded mark awarded.

      Summative assessment takes the form of examinations, case study and problem-based assignments, group presentations and reports
      and portfolios. All students are required to complete either a dissertation or professional project at Level 6.

      Appendix VI sets out the assessment format for the core and programme-specific modules. The variety of assessment methods
      employed in the core modules reflects the integration of assessment as part of the learning process. In particular, specific core modules
      reflect an interplay of formative and summative assessment.

      Additional Teaching and Learning Opportunities

      In addition to the development of student learning through module delivery, additional support, as noted above in Section 12, is provided
      to students through the following:

      a) All students have an opportunity to spend the third year away from the university on an industrial placement. It is responsibility of
      students to arrange this placement but a dedicated academic and administrative structure exists to prepare students to assist them in
      applying for and obtaining a placement;

      b) Students with appropriate language skills studying on the International Business Management Programme also have the opportunity to
      spend a year with one of our partner institutions, particularly in Europe and South East Asia, studying programmes provided by our
      partner institutions;

      c) To encourage the development of language skills support will be provided to students who wish to develop existing or new language
      skills through a competitive scholarship programme;

      d) The extensive network of partners running Newcastle Business School programmes provides students with an opportunity to study
      Newcastle Business School programmes overseas. This is particularly true in relation to Level 6 where students have an opportunity to
      complete their degree programmes in Europe, India, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia;

      e) Fluency in a language has, in the past, acted as a barrier to studying overseas. From 2009 students will be provided with an
      opportunity to spend a semester studying in English with a range of partners in Europe under a dual degree framework. Level 5 and 6 of
      the undergraduate framework has been designed to provide all students with an opportunity to take advantage of these dual award
      arrangements;

      f) Competitive travel scholarships are available to students to encourage personal development, community involvement and global
      citizenship;

      g) Places are made available to students on a competitive basis to participate in sponsored summer schools in Europe; and

      h) Specific English language support is provided to overseas and non-UK resident students through the ASk provision.

      i) Students will be given the opportunity to undertake the second semester of Level 5 at a partner institution in Europe. Their agreed
      programme of studies at the partner will equate to the 60 credits normally undertaken in Newcastle Business School and will be
      assessed by the Global Citizenship, International Literacy and Employability module (NX0203).

      j) To encourage the development of oral business communication skills for European and International students, these students are
      provided with the opportunity to develop existing language skills through participation in NX0138 Business Communication Skills 4 /
      NX0204 Business Communication Skills 5 / NX0321 Business Communication Skills 6.

      Programme Design : General Principles

      The following general principles have been applied in the development of the UG framework:

           a) All programmes have been designed around a common framework within which programmes are classified as major/joint and
              major/minor. The programme classification can be found in Appendix VII;
           b) The framework consists of a common core applicable to all programmes and programme specific modules reflecting the specialist
              nature of the joint/minor programme;
           c) Under this classification joint programmes will be designed on the basis of 50% core modules and 50% programme specific
              modules whilst the minor programmes will consist of 2/3 core and 1/3 programme specific modules;
           d) All modules, with a limited number of specific exemptions, are 20 credit modules;
           e) Modules have no more than two learning outcomes;
           f) All modules have no more than one summative assessment process;
           g) Examinations will only take place at the end of Semester Two.

19. Admission Requirements including approved arrangements for admission with advanced standing, where appropriate.

      The ability to benefit from Northumbria University programmes is assessed on a combination of academic and personal qualities which can be
      demonstrated in a number of ways. Successful completion of a GCE or VCE Advanced level course of study (or some other equivalent qualification) is
      just one way. Students who can in other ways demonstrate their ability to benefit from a Northumbria University programme, in particular mature
      students without formal qualifications, will always be considered and are invited to contact the admissions tutor to discuss their application.
      Applicants should use the personal statement on their application to illustrate their abilities, aptitudes, skills, qualifications and experiences which might
      be taken into account as well as or instead of any of the formal qualifications listed below. It is University policy to recognise a wide variety of evidence,
      and potential applicants may wish to discuss this aspect of their application with the admission tutor.
      The standard entry requirements for specific programmes within the Undergraduate Framework are shown in Appendix IX for guidance. A student’s
      particular combination of qualifications (including key skills) will always be taken into account in making an offer.

      English Language Entry Requirements
          An IELTS score of 6.0 or a Pearson Test score of 54 for entry to undergraduate provision at level 4, with an IELTS score of 6.5 or a Pearson
             Test score of 62 required for direct entry to level 6. The minimum score for any component taken is to be 5.5 or 6.0 respectively (49 or 54
             respectively), OR
          Two years recent study in English leading to an entry qualification for the programme.

      Interviews
      Interviews will be held where
           the suitability of a candidate is in doubt and further evidence is sought
           candidates present an unusual set of qualifications taken or pending, and an appropriate conditional offer needs to be determined
           candidates may need advice on the appropriateness of a programme, or on the appropriateness of a proposed preparatory course of study
      Applicants invited for an interview will always be told its purpose.

20.   Application Procedures

      Applications are processed by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) or by University Admissions in the case of overseas students.
