LUMBER DRYING / KILN OPERATOR WORKSHOP II
I am pleased to announce that I will be offering two (2) Lumber Drying / Kiln Operator Workshops in
October 2001. As in 1999, Dave Forness will, again, be the primary instructor.
The first workshop will be held in Craig, AK OCTOBER 1-5, 2001. Hands-on instruction will take
place at W.R. Jones & Son Lumber Co., courtesy of Dick Jones. Classroom instruction will take
place at the Fireweed Lodge in Klawock. The Fireweed Lodge also has rooms available and guests
can get meals there as well. For reservations contact Bob Anderson at (907) 755-2930. Other
motels in the Craig/Klawock area include Ruth Ann's Hotel & Restaurant (907) 826-3378, Shelter
Cove Lodge (907) 826-2939 and the Haida Way Lodge (907) 829-3268.
The second workshop will be held OCTOBER 8-12, 2001 at Logging and Milling Associates,
courtesy of John Squires and Brad Cox. LMA is located approximately 43 miles southeast of Delta
Junction on the Alaska Hwy. (between Dry Creek and the Johnson River, around MP 1379.1).
Accommodation logistics will be somewhat more challenging here. The folks at LMA can
accommodate motor homes and travel trailers if you have one. Otherwise, the closest lodging is the
Silverfox Roadhouse (MP 1404). The Silverfox has 6 guest cabins with kitchenettes. Contact Dan
Splain at (907) 895-4157 for reservations. Other options include: The Cherokee Lodge (MP 1412.5)
(907) 895-4814, The Alaska 7 Motel (907) 895-4848, Kelly's Alaska Country Inn (907) 895-4667 and
Smith's Green Acres (907) 895-4369. Additional information can be obtained by contacting the
Delta Junction Chamber of Commerce at (907) 895-5068. NOTE: prospective attendees are
advised to make reservations ASAP as motels in the Delta Junction area fill up fast due to buffalo
Both workshops will be essentially the same, with a combination of both classroom instruction and
hands-on exercises. Over a 5 day period, we will cover a wide range of fundamental information:
wood and moisture relationships, equilibrium moisture content, preparing kiln packs and samples,
determining moisture content, record keeping, kiln types and drying systems, kiln essentials, daily
kiln monitoring, understanding and modifying kiln schedules, equalizing and conditioning, etc.
Much of the course work will be based on information contained in the Dry Kiln Operator’s Manual,
and a few copies will be on hand for use during the workshop but each student should have his/her
own copy. Copies can be purchased from the National Hardwood Lumber Association in Memphis,
TN. The cost is $30 plus shipping and handling. Their phone number is (901) 377-1818 and their
fax number is (901) 382-6419 (talk to Denise). Another option is to download the Manual from the
Forest Products Lab web site, www.fpl.fs.fed.us/tmu/Techlinespublications.htm.
REGISTER BY SEPTEMBER 1 AND SAVE $25 !! The registration fee is $75.00 per attendee if
you register by September 1st. After September 1st, the registration fee is $100.00. In order to
provide as much individual instruction as possible, attendance will be limited to about 15 students
per workshop. In addition to covering the cost of the workshop (mostly instructor time and travel
costs), the registration fee will include snacks and breaks. You will be on your own for meals and
we should be able to make lunch arrangements for the group on a day-to-day basis -- perhaps box
lunches, pizzas, or sandwiches. As we will be outdoors part of the time, bring appropriate clothing,
boots, hats, gloves, etc. For the classroom, a calculator will come in handy.
Dave and I are looking forward to doing these workshops as we did in 1999. In addition to having
been a commercial kiln operator and owner of hardwood millwork company (in a previous life), Dave
has an easy-going, relaxed teaching style that people generally enjoy. If you have any questions or
require any additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
