                                   The Delta Project
Dear Special Education Administrators and Teachers and Parents:

The Saginaw ISD and Delta College are working together on a project that would
increase the success of students with disabilities who enroll and attend Delta College.
The project’s goal is to aid in the successful transition from high school to Delta College,
and increase the probability of those students receiving a degree from Delta.

Information from Delta College suggests that most special education students who attend
Delta College do not complete their course of study and end up leaving before they get a
degree. There are many reasons for this reality:

    Ability to self-advocate
    Inappropriate career choice
 Poor performance in high school
    Poor Attendance
 Student’s personal lack of desire to attend college
    Family support
    Transportation
 Limited general education opportunities in high school
 Personal lack of understanding their disability and how to seek needed assistance
    Lack of computer skills

The intent of the Delta Project is to assist students and their families to effectively
develop a transition plan leading to Delta College and to overcome reasons that have
limited the student’s success in college.

The project will select a group of students from Saginaw County high schools, who are
current 9th grade students who will be entering 10th grade in the fall of______. The
selected group will be supported from 10th-12th grade to aid in the successful transition
from high school to Delta College, and will also be supported during their time at Delta.

Each student will have their own transition plan specific to Delta College, and will be
based on individual needs with a plan to allow success to occur. It will drive the student’s
high school curriculum and other transition activities to ensure success. This plan will be
reviewed often and changed as the needs of the student change.
Remember: The Delta Project is not a class that students attend every day. They
will be participating in workshops after school hours (usually twice a month). Field
trips to Delta College are twice a year during the regular school day. *Please see
attached brochure for different examples of workshops offered.

We would like you to refer possible candidates to apply to participate in the Delta
Project. These students should be students you believe will, with good planning and
support, be successful at the community college level.

                                                                      Referral Process:
