QAA1 consultation on UK Quality Code for Higher Education, Chapter B11:
Research degrees

In 2010 the QAA undertook a consultation and evaluation of the set of national reference points known
as the Academic Infrastructure. The final report sets out in detail how the QAA will undertake a
programme of work to implement changes, based on the responses to the consultation. This involves
restructuring the Academic Infrastructure as the new UK Quality Code for Higher Education (the Quality
Code), with effect from the 2012-13 academic year.

Consultation:
As part of the development of the new UK Quality Code for Higher Education, the QAA is undertaking a
consultation on the content of a new Chapter - Part B, Chapter 11: Research Degrees. The Chapter is a
revised version of the current Code of Practice for the assurance of academic quality and standards in
higher education, Section 1: Postgraduate research programmes.

A copy of the new Chapter of the UK Quality Code for Higher Education, Part B, Chapter 11: Research
Degrees can be downloaded from:

consultation.aspx

Points for consideration:
- that the new Chapter adequately reflects the current context for research degrees and research
   degree provision.
Please note that the most significant changes are to terminology and format.
You may also wish to comment on:
- your overall impressions of the Chapter
- the Chapter Expectation
- the Indicators of sound practice.
