Note: I realize that this is an abstract article. However, the sections which you will be using are brief so
read them over many times until you have your own ideas about the meaning of the section and then write
those ideas down.

QUESTION 1: In the chapter “Social Power: Conflict Theory of Crime,” Richard Quinney says the following: “The
Official Definition of Crime: Crime as a legal definition of human conduct is created by agents of the dominant class
in a politically organized society.”

Describe as best you can and in your own words, what Quinney means by this statement in three or four sentences.
Mention in your answer his ideas about agents of the law, how crime is not inherent in behavior, the defining of
persons and behaviors as criminal, and the relationship between the number of definitions of crime and the amount
of crime.

QUESTION 2: In the chapter “Social Power: Conflict Theory of Crime,” Richard Quinney says the following:
“Applying Definitions of Crime: Definitions of crime are applied by the class that has the power to shape the
enforcement and administration of criminal law.”

Describe as best you can and in your own words, what Quinney means by this statement in three or four sentences.
Mention in your answer his ideas about what happens to those whose interests conflict with the ones represented in
the law, how local conditions determine how the definitions will be applied, and what are the crucial factors in
determining the criminality of human acts.

QUESTION 3: In the chapter “Social Power: Conflict Theory of Crime,” Richard Quinney says the following:
“Constructing an Ideology of Crime: The ideology of crime is constructed and diffused by the dominant class to
secure its hegemony.” (Hegemony: the dominance or leadership of one social group or nation over others)

Describe as best you can and in your own words, what Quinney means by this statement in three or four sentences
Mention in your answer his ideas about the development of conceptions of crime, the most concrete way an
ideology of crime is formed, and the conceptions that are most critical.

QUESTION 4: Among sociological ideas, conflict theory would likely be viewed by most Americans as the most
radical. In the crime example, the idea that what is crime is just what is defined by the people in power and not
what in intrinsically wrong may seem far-fetched.

Write three or four sentences providing your reaction to Quinney’s conflict theory of crime.
