Welcome to: Mrs. Cox’s Freshman English Class
Room: F204 Phone: 759-8449 ext. 58004
Welcome to Mountain Pointe. I am thrilled to be your teacher and welcome you to your new
Freshman English class! I hope you all had a nice summer and you are energized to start out the
year. The following guidelines are to ensure you have a successful, productive, and enjoyable class.
GRADES: Quarter grades (two per semester) for the course will be determined by weighted
percentages, listed below:
Freshman English Final Grades
College Prep Composition 30% First Quarter/Third Quarter Grade 40%
Tests & Quizzes 30% Second Quarter/ Fourth Quarter Grade 40%
Homework & Class Work 30% Final Exam Grade 20%
Engagement 10% Fall/Spring Semester Grade 100%
Quarter Grade 100%
A= 90% -100%
B= 80% - 89%
C= 70% - 79%
D= 60% - 69 %
F= 59% and below
*Grades can be rounded up, but must be at least 4 tenths away from next grade up (89.6% can be
rounded to 90%). Students must have good behavior and participation to be considered, in other
words this must be earned – it is not automatic!
Student Engagement: Student engagement is made up of attendance, personal responsibility,
preparedness with class texts and materials, participation in classroom discussions, complete work
in a timely manner, and appropriate classroom behavior. These activities will comprise 10% of the
student’s grade. Students will be responsible for self-assessment of his or her engagement grade
and will have an opportunity to impact half of the engagement grade.
WHEN YOU MISS CLASS . . .
M AKEUP WORK: . It is your responsibility to collect any makeup work upon your return
and/or schedule a missed test or quiz. When absences are preplanned due to sports or
vacation, it is advised you get the assignments from me ahead of time **Note: You have
one week from the day you return to makeup any quizzes or exams.
ABSENCES: Students will NOT receive credit for any work or deadline missed because of
an unexcused absence. Students will be accountable for information missed.
SWEEPS: All homework assignments must be turned to me by the end of the school day or
they will be considered late.
LATE WORK: Assigned homework that is turned in late will be accepted for half credit the
following class meeting. Assignments are considered late if they are not turned in when I
collect them. Please note half credit is an ‘F’, so I do not recommend abusing this policy.
FRESHMAN LATE POLICY FOR COLLEGE PREP AND LARGE SCALE ASSIGNMENTS:

No credit will be given for an unexcused absence.
*Cases of extreme emergency or extended illness will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Classroom Expectations & Behavior
Students are expected to be responsible for themselves and their actions. Food is not
permitted in the classroom (water bottles are okay), nor will any disruptive behavior be tolerated.
Students are expected to NOT bring any disruptive items to the classroom. This is a no cell-
phone zone! Items include but are not limited to food, magazines, newspapers, DVD players,
iPods, iPads, mp3s, cell phones, game boys, etc. Disruptive items will be confiscated and turned in
Students are expected to act and speak in a respectful manner/attitude to their teacher, and
peers at all times. Please do not talk while others are talking, disturb other’s possessions, or
Plagiarism: According to the New Webster‘s Dictionary the definition of plagiarism is “to use of
pass someone else’s ideas, inventions, writings, etc. as one’s own . . .” Whether work is
stolen, given, or bought, the punishment for plagiarism is a zero on the assignment, a parent phone
call, and a referral. Simplified: if you copy anything, you will fail the assignment. If the crime is
committed twice you will fail this class in its entirety. **Please see the English department policy
online for further explanation.
Very few students ever cross these boundaries, but for those who do there are consequences
including parent phone calls, office referrals or simply spending time collecting themselves in the
hall until they can behave etc. If these steps do not correct inappropriate behavior, other steps will
be taken such as an individual behavior contract. Most students are mature and behave
appropriately, so I expect that very few students will be subject to these actions.
Students with a D/F in the class will be required to come back and complete make-up work and/or
get help in order to improve their grade. A/B/C students can take advantage of this opportunity as
well by appointment. Students will need to obtain a pass to come to my class so, please be sure to
plan ahead in order to obtain a pass.
Assignments should be turned in on time and professionally presented – meaning no frayed edges,
crumpled or folded papers, or sloppy last minute work. I expect all assignments to be in MLA
format, unless otherwise stated. Assignments must be composed in complete sentences (unless
otherwise notified), with proper spelling and grammar.
THINGS YOU’LL NEED:
In addition to your books, you will be responsible to bring the following to class each day.
College ruled notebook paper
Number 2 pencils and blue or black ink pens
USB drive (nice to have)
I am delighted to be your teacher and I am looking forward to getting to know you. Please come
and see me for any questions you have throughout the year. Remember I am not a mind reader,
so please communicate with me about any problems or extenuating circumstances you may have.
