Administrative History
The Canada-United States Permanent Joint Board on Defence (PJBD) was established through a
joint press release issued after the 18 August 1940 Ogdensburg meeting between Canadian Prime
Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King and American President Franklin Roosevelt. The Board
was set up to study matters relating to sea, land, and air defence problems as well as personnel
and material.

The PJBD's organization included eleven people, five from the Canadian section and six from the
American section. There was a civilian chairman, a defence department representative, a Foreign
Service representative, and representatives of the three armed services, including a US naval
member.

Scope and Content
The fonds consists of ten folders of photocopied material selected from the US Naval History
Division, Operational Archives in Washington, which primarily reflect the Board’s activities in
two areas: coastal defences and the post-war disposition of American built and/or operated
facilities in Canada. Each folder corresponds to a different topic, such as the defence of BC, the
Northwest River staging field or Alaskan sector air facilities. Also includes copies of
correspondence.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Fonds was copied from the US Naval History Division, Operational Archives, Strategic
Plans Division Records in Washington, DC, Series XIII.
